Paver Repair & Re-Sanding — Shelby Township, Michigan
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Shelby Township
A paver that has moved often shows why, if you note where it went and which way. Under Shelby Township's canopy, a raised paver beside an oak, a patch that rose over winter and a corner that sank at the edge are three different repairs. We sort out the cause first, then relevel, replace broken pavers, reset edges and re-sand, with a written estimate within 24 hours.

In Shelby Township
Shelby Township, which runs from Dequindre Rd east to Hayes Rd, grew from 29,467 residents in 1970 to 79,408 in 2020, and its 1990s and 2000s subdivisions went onto wooded and larger lots, many toward Stony Creek Metropark and down the Clinton River valley past River Bends Park. Paving there sits under mature oaks and maples and under spruce and pine privacy rows planted decades ago and now at full height. Before any paver comes up, we read the movement.
Pavers lifted near a tree, along a line that runs back toward the trunk, may be riding a root. Iowa State University Extension notes that pavers accommodate root growth better than rigid concrete, and because they are separate units, a lifted section can be taken up and relaid with the same pavers instead of broken out. We relay the pavers and leave the root alone, because cutting a major root can kill a tree.
A patch that rose over winter is more likely frost. Heave takes freezing weather, water and a soil that wicks it upward, and uneven lift is the damaging kind. Judge it after the thaw, when frost-lifted pavers may settle back. For heave that returns every year, the remedy from the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association (CMHA) is a frost-resistant subbase: a rebuild, not a reset.
A dip in the middle of a patio points below the pavers: a base that settled, often from poor compaction, or bedding sand that washed out. Pavers sunk or tipping at the edge point to a failed restraint. Cracks are the last case: CMHA treats a tight hairline crack as generally harmless to performance, though broken pavers can signal weak support underneath, so the base gets checked when they are replaced.
How we work
Read the Movement, Then Rebuild

Each problem area gets a string line before work starts, so we fix what is measured rather than what the shadows suggest. An extractor lifts the pavers, which are stacked in the order they came out. A settled base is brought back with compacted base material, not extra bedding sand; at a failed edge, the restraint is repaired or replaced and spiked into the base. Fresh bedding is screeded, the pavers go back in their original pattern slightly above their neighbors, and the compactor's passes overlap onto the undisturbed field. Joints are cleared of leaf litter and old sand to at least 1½ inches before polymeric sand goes in and is compacted.
Fixes That Ignore the Cause
Sawing through a major root so the walk lies flat can kill the tree that lifted it, and the walk still has to be relaid. Resetting frost-heaved pavers before the ground thaws means building on frozen soil, which CMHA rules out, and pavers leveled on ground that is still heaved can sit low once it settles. Sweeping polymeric sand over joints still packed with old sand and rotted leaves makes a shallow layer that peels and flakes. Clustering replacement pavers together, instead of scattering them, puts the color difference in one obvious spot.
When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Shelby Township
Spring, after the thaw, is when a winter's movement can be judged, and CMHA's maintenance guide adds a late-summer or early-fall check. The same guide says pavers more than 1/8 inch proud should be fixed before winter, since shovel and plow blades catch raised edges. Under heavy canopy the joints have to be cleared of leaves and seed and dried before polymeric sand goes in, and the sand then needs about 48 hours above freezing. Before the fall leaf drop is the easier window; after it, the leaves come off first and the nights run colder.
Questions, answered
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Shelby Township: FAQs
Will relaying our root-lifted walk hurt the maple beside it?
We do not cut or shave the root. We take up the lifted section, level what the root allows and relay the pavers over it. If the root keeps growing, it can lift the section again, and the estimate says so. Whether to prune, shield or remove the root is a question for an arborist, not a paver repair.
Our association wants the walk fixed. Can the new pavers blend in?
They can be placed to blend, but no replacement will look the same as pavers that have weathered in place for years, and some colors are discontinued. Spreading replacements through the pattern helps, and CMHA advises using spares from the original installation, if any were kept. If the association keeps a list of approved paver colors, check it before anything is ordered.
Do weeds in the joints mean the base is failing?
No. CMHA says joint weeds start from seed blown in and caught in the sand; they do not come up through the base. Leaves, seeds and other organic matter in the joints also displace sand over time. Cleaning the joints out deep and re-sanding with polymeric sand helps; cleaning and sealing the field is paver restoration, which has its own page.
How is a repair priced if there is no published rate?
Each one is quoted on its own, since a single cracked paver and a settled patio edge are different jobs. Photos of the area and a short note on what moved are usually enough, and the written estimate arrives within 24 hours. If the cause is unclear, we look in person first. The shop is about 15 minutes away on Hall Rd, with no travel fee.
