Gutter Cleaning in Shelby Township

Gutters on a wooded lot work on the trees' schedule. In late spring the maples drop their seeds and the oaks drop catkins, and a gutter that was clean in March is half full by June. Pine and spruce rows planted decades ago as privacy screens shed needles year-round, and needles mat together into a felt that water cannot pass. The Blower and the Skipped Downspout

Blowing the gutters out from the roof. It scatters wet debris across the siding, the beds and the roof valleys, leaves the heavy sludge in the trough, and never touches the downspout, which is where most clogs live. The elbow at the top of a downspout catches maple seeds and needle felt and packs solid, and a gutter that looks empty from the ladder still overflows in the next storm. The other failure is a ladder leaned on the gutter itself, which bends the lip and opens the seams that were holding.

Timing It Right

Two visits a year: one in late May or June after the seed drop, and one in November after the last major leaf fall and before hard freeze. Lots under heavy oak toward Stony Creek or spruce rows near the Clinton River often add a third in early fall. The November visit is the one that protects the fascia and the roof edge through winter, so it is the one not to skip.
