Paver Repair & Re-Sanding — Ray Township, Michigan

Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Ray Township

On an acreage parcel, a paver walk or apron that runs out to gravel, lawn or field depends on its edge restraint to keep it from spreading. When that edge fails, joints widen and the outer pavers tip and settle. We repair or replace the restraint, reset what moved and re-sand.

In Ray Township

Ray Township is 36.5 square miles of farm and acreage parcels, and its own zoning ordinance notes that a majority of its roads are gravel. Homes run from farmsteads of the 1847 Wolcott Mill era to ranches on county roads like 29 Mile Rd and North Ave and acreage homes far back on private drives, often with a barn behind. Paving that ends at gravel or turf has no curb to lean on, and CMHA, the association that now publishes the paver industry's technical notes, calls for an edge restraint along the perimeter and wherever pavers meet another material.

CMHA's list for homes names poured concrete curbs, precast concrete or cut stone, paver-specific plastic, aluminum, and steel where the base is rigid. Landscape edging, timber and soil backfill are missing from it, and so is a restraint set on the bedding: spikes go into the compacted base, which should run past the restraint. A failing edge shows within a foot or two of it, as widening joints, tipping edge pavers and sand escaping.

Weight is the other test. CMHA's construction guidance calls for at least 4 inches of compacted base under walks and patios and 6 under driveways, more in cold or wet soils, plus drain pipe under vehicle areas in clay or slow-draining soil. Ray's farm soils are clay. A walk built for feet that now carries a pickup or tractor is doing a driveway's job, and a reset on the same base leaves that unchanged. When the base is simply too thin for the load, the estimate says so.

How we work

Edges First, Then Level, Then Joints

Work starts at the perimeter. Where the restraint is loose, broken, missing or on the wrong layer, the edge rows beside it come up, the base under them is compacted, and the restraint is repaired or replaced and spiked into the base before the edge pavers go back in line. Inside the field, sunken sections are lifted and their pavers cleaned and stacked; a low base is built up with compacted base material rather than sand, and a fresh bedding layer near an inch thick is screeded before relaying along string lines. Broken pavers are replaced in the same pass. Each disturbed area gets at least two passes of the plate compactor. The joints are then cleared to 1½ inches, refilled with polymeric sand on a dry surface, compacted until they take no more, left 1/8 inch under the paver tops, cleared of dust and watered in.

Edges and Fixes That Do Not Hold

Timber borders, landscape edging and a ridge of packed soil all look like an edge without acting like one, and CMHA accepts none of them as a paver restraint. Troweled concrete edging appears in its guidance only for ground that does not freeze, and Michigan ground does. Filling a wheel rut with extra bedding sand leaves its cause in place, whether poorly drained bedding or a base too thin for the load, and the rut comes back. A narrow pressure-washer tip aimed at gravel grit on an apron strips the joints and can undermine the pavers. Sealing comes after edge repairs, not instead of them.

When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Ray Township

Edge and base repairs wait for thawed ground; CMHA says never to build on frozen ground. Polymeric sand needs dry pavers and about 48 hours above freezing, and NWS Detroit dates the close of the growing season in Southeast Michigan to October, so late-fall joint work rides on the forecast. If a plow, tractor blade or shovel will clear the paving, reset any paver sitting over 1/8 inch above its neighbors before the first snow, and shovel diagonally to the pattern. Judge heaved spots after the spring thaw, when heaved ground can settle back.

Questions, answered

Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Ray Township: FAQs

Our paver apron meets the gravel drive, and that edge keeps spreading. Why?

Spreading edges usually trace to a restraint that failed, shifted or never qualified. CMHA wants paver edging, precast or stone, or a poured curb, set on a base that extends past it; soil, timber and landscape edging will not hold. We lift the edge rows, fix or replace the restraint on the base, reset the pavers in line and refill the joints.

Did our clay soil make the patio heave?

Not by itself. Frost heave needs freezing weather, water and a frost-susceptible soil together. Silts, loams and very fine sands heave worst, clay less severely. Clay does drain slowly, though, and by CMHA's account a base that holds water is one reason pavers settle. After the thaw we lift the area and correct the base; a reset levels the surface without changing the soil.

Can one broken paver by the barn door be replaced on its own?

Yes. The broken paver comes out, a new one goes in, and the patch is compacted, re-sanded and compacted again. It may not match its neighbors, because weather and traffic wear and shift the color of pavers in service. A tight hairline crack may not need replacing, though damage can also signal weak support below.

Do you take repairs at the end of long gravel drives?

Yes, and the drive costs nothing extra, whether the property sits near Ray Center or out off Wolcott Rd. Photos are the quickest start: the paved area from a distance, then each edge, low spot and broken paver up close. If we need to see it, we visit. You receive a written, line-item estimate within 24 hours; paver repair carries no published price.
