House Washing in Ray Township

Three kinds of house sit along these roads. The farmsteads near Indian Trail and out toward Ray Center date to the settlement era around the 1847 Wolcott Mill, painted wood and brick, a good many still standing beside their original barns. Mid-century ranches run long and low along 26 Mile Rd and 29 Mile Rd, a fair share of them re-sided in aluminum that has chalked to a dull powder. The newer acreage homes sit at the far end of private drives in brick and vinyl, with a metal-sided pole barn behind. One crew washes all three in a day and switches mix as it moves from wall to wall.

What lands on them is shared. Because most of the township's roads are gravel, a fine mineral dust rides the air from the first dry week of spring and settles on siding, window glass and barn steel alike. It is grit rather than growth, and a garden hose turns it into streaks instead of lifting it. The iron is a separate matter. Homes here draw from individual wells, and dissolved iron oxidizes the moment it hits air and dries on a surface, which is why the mark under a spigot or along a sprinkler arc is orange and why scrubbing does nothing at all to it.

Dust releases with a surfactant and a low-pressure rinse. Iron does not. It needs an acid-based remover, correctly diluted, kept clear of the plantings and neutralized once the stain lifts, so that work is quoted on its own line rather than folded into the wash. Algae on the shaded side needs a third approach again. House washing starts at $349, and a two-story with a barn to match takes the better part of a morning. What Pressure Does to These Walls

A wand held close enough to move dust will also crack vinyl at the impact point and push water behind the laps into the sheathing. On chalked aluminum it strips powder unevenly and leaves a blotched wall that shows up in low afternoon light. On old farmhouse brick it cuts mortar joints that have been sound since the mill was still grinding feed. The other failure is chemical. A rust remover mixed too strong or left to dwell too long bleaches the brick around the stain, and an orange mark becomes a pale one.

Timing It Right

April through June is the busiest stretch, once the gravel roads have dried and the first dust of the year is already on the wall. That timing lifts the winter salt film off the road-facing side in the same visit. There is no one school calendar to book around, since Armada Area Schools covers part of the township and three other districts cover the rest, so most people schedule around planting instead.
