Can Pressure Washing Damage Brick? Yes — Here's How It Happens

Yes — but the brick face is rarely the first casualty. The Brick Is Tough. The Wall Is Not.

A fired clay brick is a genuinely hard object, which is why "brick is fine to pressure wash" became folk wisdom. The wall, though, is a system: brick faces, mortar joints, weep holes and — on older homes — a softer lime-based mortar that predates modern Portland mixes. Pressure damage in masonry is almost never a shattered brick. It is eroded joints, blown-out spalls and water driven where it cannot escape.

1. Mortar Joint Erosion

Mortar is engineered to be softer than the brick — it is the sacrificial element of the wall. A pressure wand raking along a joint at close range carves it out the way a river cuts a bank. 3. Driven Water

Masonry walls manage water by absorbing and releasing it slowly, with weep holes at the base doing the draining. High pressure aimed at joints, vents or weep holes drives water into the wall assembly faster than it was ever meant to accept — showing up as interior damp patches and efflorescence weeks later, with nobody connecting it to the wash.

Painted brick is its own case: pressure lifts paint from masonry unevenly, and what remains bonds harder than what left. If the goal is stripping, that is a controlled process; if the goal is cleaning, painted brick gets soft washed like siding.
