In Rochester
The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA), the paver industry's technical group, sorts cracks by what they say. A tight hairline crack with little opening generally does not affect how the surface performs, and it can stay. Open cracks, chips and spalls deserve a closer look, because CMHA notes that damage like that can indicate inadequate support underneath. One broken paver where something heavy landed is a simple swap. A band of cracked pavers along a shallow dip points to the base, and new pavers set on the same soft spot face the same strain.
Paint Creek and the Clinton River meet in town, and settling is common near the creek; the older concrete walks there show it, and pavers laid on the same ground can too. CMHA ties depressions to settled soil or base and to a base that stays saturated, and which one applies decides the repair. A missing paver belongs back in promptly, since the gap puts the pavers around it at risk of damage. A hole filled with mortar or asphalt is its own problem: CMHA counts a patch of a different material as a distress that weakens the paving, and the fix is to dig it out and set pavers.
Older pavers also raise the question of looks. Weather and foot traffic slowly wear a paver's face and shift its color, and some colors are no longer made, so a new paver reads as new beside weathered ones. If your walk is clay brick rather than concrete pavers, its joint sand locks the bricks together by friction and keeps their edges from meeting and chipping. Under the full canopy around Rochester Municipal Park and Dinosaur Hill, leaves and seed working into the joints also displace sand.
How we work
Diagnose, Replace, Re-Sand

We check the area for soft spots, pull a string line across it and decide whether the job is a replacement, a reset or both. A cracked paver locked tight between its neighbors is broken out with a hammer and chisel, so the pavers around it are not pried and chipped getting it out. Neighbors that need to come up are lifted one at a time, scraped clean and stacked in order. If the bedding underneath is firm and level, the new paver is set into the pattern. If it is soft or low, the opening is widened, the base is corrected with compacted base material, and fresh bedding goes down before the pavers return along string lines. A plate compactor seats the area, then polymeric sand is swept into the fully dry joints, compacted, topped up and compacted again.
Patches That Make It Worse
A dab of mortar in a paver gap looks finished, but it is the kind of patch CMHA says to remove and replace with pavers. Swapping a broken paver without asking why it broke sets a new paver on the same weak support. Leaving a hole open through a winter puts the pavers around it at risk. In an old joint, polymeric sand stirred into the leftover sand is a mix its makers rule out; it goes into a joint cleaned to full depth, alone. And sealer adds no structural strength, so a coat of it will not hold a cracked paver together.
When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Rochester
Replacements and resets can go ahead whenever the ground is thawed, and a missing paver should not wait for spring if the weather allows. Re-sanding is pickier. The low blocks near the creek hold humidity, so after rain or cleaning we wait at least a day and until the pavers are dry on top, on their sides and down in the joints, and the sand then needs about two days above freezing to set. CMHA suggests checking pavers twice a year, during or right after a spring rain and again in late summer or early fall.
Questions, answered
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Rochester: FAQs
Does every cracked paver need to be replaced?
No. CMHA notes that a tight hairline crack generally does not affect performance, so a paver like that can stay. Pavers that are cracked open, spalled, badly chipped or missing are the ones to replace, and look harder at any cluster of cracked pavers in one area, since damage can mean weak support underneath. The estimate separates simple swaps from spots that need the base corrected.
Can you find a paver that matches my older walk?
Not exactly, and we do not promise a match. Pavers in service change color as traffic and weather wear the surface, and some colors are discontinued. We reuse every intact paver, add the closest available paver only where one is broken, and scatter the replacements through the area so the difference does not collect in one spot.
My walk is clay brick. Is the repair different?
The steps are similar, but the joints matter more. Wind and rain wear down the tops of clay-paver joints over time, so periodic re-sanding is part of their care. The Brick Industry Association calls for stabilized sand, such as polymeric sand, in clay-paver joints wider than 3/16 of an inch. Cleaning before a re-sand stays gentle, since hard spray digs joints out.
Will a repaired spot near the creek sink again?
The repair corrects the base under the pavers we lift, but it cannot change the ground around them, and no repair comes with a promised lifespan. Settling near Paint Creek is why we look for the cause before quoting. Pricing follows the same logic: no published rate, and a written estimate within 24 hours of photos or a visit.
