Paver Repair & Re-Sanding — Port Huron, Michigan
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Port Huron
A paver standing higher than its neighbors is the repair to make before snow, because shovels and plow blades catch a raised edge. In Port Huron we lift raised or sunken pavers, correct the base and reset them, replace broken units, straighten drifted edges and re-sand joints with polymeric sand. Send photos or book a look for a written estimate within 24 hours.

In Port Huron
Start with the trees. The city's master plan describes large trees over the homes in Palmer and Olde Town and tall, mature trees through Sherman Woods, and it notes Palmer sidewalks where roots have pushed concrete into uneven pavement. Iowa State University Extension says pavers accommodate root growth better than rigid concrete, though they won't stop a root from lifting them, and unlike a poured walk a lifted run of pavers can be taken up and relaid. Root work is not part of what we do, and Extension warns that removing major roots can lead to crown dieback or the death of the tree.
Water is the second force here. The master plan maps floodplain buffer zones along Lake Huron, the St. Clair River, the Black River and the Black River Canal, and on January 27, 2024 an ice jam on the Black River sent floodwater over the seawall and into yards in about 45 minutes. The Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association (CMHA) lists a saturated base and washed-out bedding sand among the causes of pavers that sink, so a low spot that shows up after high water gets opened up to find the layer that moved.
Close to half the city's housing units are rented. The city's rental certification checklist names the sidewalk and driveway among the exterior items it inspects, and an owner living elsewhere can send photos of a tipped walk and get a written estimate without meeting us there.
How we work
Taking Up a Lifted Walk and Relaying It

We run a string line across the raised or sunken stretch first, since shadows make a dip look deeper than it is. The first paver comes out with an extractor or two flat pry tools, or is broken out with a chisel when the joints are locked tight, and each one after it is cleaned and stacked in order. With the paving up, the base gets the fix: low areas are filled with base material and compacted, and fresh concrete sand is screeded about an inch deep as bedding. The pavers go back in their own pattern along string lines, set a sixteenth to an eighth of an inch high, and a plate compactor makes at least two passes that lap onto paving that was never lifted. Polymeric sand closes the joints.
Repairs That Leave a Trip Edge Behind
Packing extra bedding sand under the low pavers to meet a high one fails, because CMHA says bedding cannot make up for an uneven base and the unevenness shows through again. Chopping through a big root to flatten a walk puts the tree at risk. Sealing a walk with a lip in it changes how it looks, not where the pavers sit, since sealer does nothing for a failed base. Blasting old joints with a narrow tip digs out sand and can undermine the pavers, and joints emptied that way are one reason weeds come through new sand, as our post on weeds in polymeric sand explains. And base work never goes onto frozen ground.
When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Port Huron
Raised pavers are fall work. Get any paver more than 1/8 inch proud back down before the first snow, while the ground can still be worked, and shovel on a diagonal to the pattern, as CMHA suggests; our post on ice melt for pavers covers de-icers. A section that rose over the winter is judged after the thaw, since frost-lifted ground can settle back. Polymeric sand needs dry paving and about two days above freezing, so late-season re-sanding follows the forecast. Walk the paving each spring, during or after a rain, and again in late summer.
Questions, answered
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Port Huron: FAQs
Can you fix a paver walk that a tree root has pushed up?
We can lift the pavers, correct the base and relay them, but the root stays. We don't cut or remove roots, and if one is still growing under the walk, we'll tell you, since pavers don't stop a root from lifting them again. What to do about the root is a decision for you and an arborist.
Our yard took on water. Do the pavers need to come up?
Not automatically. Once the ground has dried out, and thawed if it froze, check the paving with a string line. A stretch that sits low or keeps a puddle after rain has likely settled; one that stays true may only need its joints refilled. Where it dropped, look first at washed-out bedding or a base that stayed wet, and the fix is lifting those pavers and rebuilding beneath them.
Do I need city approval to repair pavers in Olde Town?
Ask the city before work starts. Port Huron's Historic District Commission reviews plans for the construction, alteration and repair of structures in the historic district before a permit is granted. The commission's page doesn't say whether a paver walk or patio counts, so that answer has to come from the city. The written estimate spells out the work, which gives you something specific to show when you ask.
How much does paver repair cost in Port Huron?
There is no set price, because each repair is different work: how many pavers come up, what the base needs, how much joint sand is replaced and how much edge is reset. Send a wide photo and close-ups, or book an on-site look; you get the estimate in writing within 24 hours, and the trip adds nothing to it. Cleaning and sealing are priced under paver restoration.
