Paver Repair & Re-Sanding — Pleasant Ridge, Michigan
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Pleasant Ridge
Pavers under an old canopy contend with roots that push them up, shade that keeps their joints damp and leaf litter that settles into them. We lift and reset sunken or heaved sections on a corrected base, replace broken pavers and re-sand the joints with polymeric sand.

In Pleasant Ridge
Pleasant Ridge fits its houses into about half a square mile bordered by Woodward Ave and I-696, and century-old trees arch over Ridge Rd and the side streets. Where a walk, patio or drive here is laid in pavers, those trees are often part of its trouble. Roots push up any paving as they grow. Pavers accommodate that better than rigid poured concrete, which cracks and buckles, and pavers that shift can be lifted and laid again.
The root is another matter. Cutting a major root can kill the tree, and we do no root work. When a root is the cause, we tell you, and whether to call an arborist is your decision, since a living root can lift a reset section again.
Shade does slower damage. Leaves and seeds collect in the joints, moss takes hold, and weeds sprout from windblown seed caught there, not from the base below. As the sand washes out, the joints widen, the paved surface loses stiffness and the pavers begin to move. Settled low spots then hold water in the shade. Re-sanding comes after the loose and sunken pavers are fixed, never before.
How we work
How a repair under the trees goes

It starts with photos or a visit, and a written estimate within 24 hours that lists each repair: sections to lift, pavers to replace and any failed edging. There is no published price, because a re-sand and a releveled section with new base under it are different jobs.
On the day, a sunken section comes up one paver at a time. Each is cleaned and stacked in order, then goes back in the original pattern, so a repair on a historic street still reads as part of the walk. We find what gave way underneath, and a low base gets compacted base material, never extra bedding sand. Fresh bedding is screeded, the pavers are relaid along string lines 1/16 to 1/8 inch above their neighbors, and the plate compactor makes at least two passes over the repair and onto the undisturbed pavers beside it. Cracked or broken pavers are replaced as part of the same repair.
Then the joints are cleared to at least 1.5 inches deep and left to dry through. Polymeric sand is swept in and compacted until a finger no longer sinks into a joint, finished about 1/8 inch below the paver tops, and the surface is blown clean before any water goes on.
Shortcuts that fail under a canopy
Cutting through a root to flatten a walk can cost you the tree. Topping up moss-filled joints with polymeric sand fails too: laid over partly cleaned joints, it peels and flakes, and the makers want at least 1.5 inches of joint depth. Swept onto pavers still damp from a shady morning, it sticks to the faces and can leave a haze.
Filling a dip with extra bedding sand instead of fixing the base lets the unevenness come back through. Blasting moss out of the joints with a narrow tip can cut past the joint sand and undermine the pavers. Joints are cleared without disturbing the bedding, and any washing uses a wide, low-angle spray. Cleaning and sealing after the repairs is brick paver restoration.
When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Pleasant Ridge
Polymeric sand needs dry pavers and at least 48 hours above freezing once it is down, with the sprinklers off. Deep shade slows the drying, so a re-sand here waits for a run of dry days. Base work never goes on frozen ground. The National Weather Service puts the end of Southeast Michigan's growing season in October, and dry, frost-free days get scarcer after that. If a section rose over the winter, judge it after the thaw, because frost-lifted paving can settle back. Walk it each spring during a rain, when puddles show where it has sunk.
Questions, answered
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Pleasant Ridge: FAQs
Will the repaired part of our walk match the rest?
Lifted pavers are reused wherever they come up whole, so a releveled section keeps the same weathered pavers in the same pattern. Replacements differ: pavers in service fade and wear, so new or stored ones look different; we scatter them instead of grouping them and can't promise a match. If you want to change the paver or the pattern, ask the city first whether its historic district standards apply.
Why do weeds keep coming back between our pavers?
They grow from seed that blows in and lodges in the joints, not up through the base, and shaded joints packed with leaf debris hold that seed well. Clearing the joints to at least 1.5 inches and re-sanding with polymeric sand leaves seed less to grip. Our post on weeds in polymeric sand explains why some re-sanded joints still sprout.
Our patio never gets full sun. Can it take polymeric sand?
Yes, once it is completely dry. Polymeric sand sticks to damp pavers, and damp surfaces or high humidity can leave a haze. The makers call for dry tops, sides and joints, and one asks for a 24-hour wait after rain or cleaning. On a shaded patio we check the joints before any sand goes in and move the date if they are still wet.
Do you travel to Pleasant Ridge for paver repair?
Yes. The shop is on Hall Road in Clinton Township, about 30 minutes away, and there is no travel fee whether the pavers are on Ridge Rd or a block from Gainsboro Park. Send photos, or we can come look, and you get a written estimate within 24 hours. The paver repair page explains what each repair involves.
