Paver Repair & Re-Sanding — Oak Park, Michigan
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Oak Park
Where a paver walk or patio has been added to one of Oak Park's 1950s lots, it meets older work at its edges: a poured drive, a brick stoop, a planter or the lawn. Those edges and seams are where a failing restraint shows first. We rebuild edges that have let go, reset pavers that have shifted and re-sand the joints.

In Oak Park
Most of Oak Park went up in one burst of 1950s building, and on many lots the drive, porch and brick stoop are still the originals. Where pavers were added to one of these lots, as a patio, a front walk or a border along the drive, they end against that older work or against the lawn, from the blocks around David H. Shepherd Park to the side streets off Greenfield Rd, Coolidge Hwy and 9 Mile Rd. That makes the edges the part to watch. The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) calls for a restraint along the perimeter of a paver surface and wherever the paving material changes. The wall of the house can serve as one. An open edge against grass or a bed needs a real restraint: plastic or aluminum edging made for pavers, precast concrete, or a poured curb.
When an edge gives out, the signs are specific. Joints widen along the outer edge or at the seam where pavers meet another surface, and the pavers there tip, twist or settle, most visibly within a foot or two of the edge. Sand escapes through the widened joints, and without side support the pavers lose their interlock. Flat landscape edging made for flower beds does not give enough lateral support, timber warps and rots, and soil backfill is never a restraint.
Oak Park's masonry adds a second check. Brick stoops and planters here often carry efflorescence, the white bloom of salts left by water, and concrete pavers can show it too. White film after re-sanding can be that bloom or polymeric haze, and the two are handled differently; our paver efflorescence guide covers the first.
How we work
Rebuilding an Edge That Let Go

A string line along the edge and across the seam shows how far the movement reaches. The pavers in that band come up and are stacked in order, and the old edging comes out with them. The new restraint sits on compacted base, never on the bedding sand, with its spikes driven into the base rather than the soil, and the base should extend past the restraint at least as far as the base is thick. Where a low spot has formed near the edge, the base is built back with compacted base material before fresh bedding is screeded. The pavers return to their original pattern and are compacted with passes that overlap the undisturbed area, then the joints are cleared to 1½ inches and refilled with polymeric sand on a dry day.
Edges and Patches That Will Not Hold
One shortcut is patching. When a few pavers break or go missing, the gap gets filled with concrete or asphalt, and CMHA treats that patch as a distress of its own, since it can compromise the structure and roughen the surface around it. The repair is to remove the patch, lay new bedding where it is needed and set pavers. Edge shortcuts fail the same way. CMHA lists a troweled concrete edge only for ground that does not freeze, steel edging belongs on rigid bases only, and no restraint should rest on the bedding sand. Re-sanding before the restraint is fixed puts new sand into joints that are still opening.
When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Oak Park
Edges are easiest to judge in spring, once the frost is out, during or just after a rain, when puddles show any settling near the seams. Restraint and base work need thawed ground, and polymeric sand needs dry pavers and two days above freezing to set. Pavers along a seam that stand more than 1/8 inch proud should be fixed before snow season. When you shovel, CMHA advises pushing the blade diagonally to the paver pattern, and our ice melt guide covers what to put down afterward.
Questions, answered
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Oak Park: FAQs
The pavers along our lawn keep spreading apart. Why?
The edge has lost its restraint, or never had a proper one. Flat landscape edging, timber and packed soil cannot hold pavers tight, so the joints open, sand escapes and the outer pavers tip. We pull back the affected band, set a restraint made for pavers on compacted base, relay the pavers and re-sand the joints.
Someone filled a gap in our patio with concrete. Can it be fixed?
Yes. The patch comes out, the bedding is redone where needed and pavers go back in. New pavers will not look the same as ones that have weathered on your patio for years, and some colors are no longer made, so rather than set every new paver in one spot, we can mix some into less visible areas and move originals into the gap.
A white film showed up after our joints were re-sanded. What is it?
One of two things. Polymeric haze forms when sand dust is left on the pavers before watering or when they were damp. It should be cleaned off while still moist; once cured it takes hot water and scrubbing. A white bloom that appears as the joints dry can be efflorescence carried up by the activation water, which is treated as efflorescence, not haze.
Do you list a price for paver edge repair in Oak Park?
No. A repair is quoted after we see it, from your photos or in person, because the length of edge, the restraint it needs and any base work all change the job. You get a written estimate within 24 hours. Oak Park is about 32 minutes from our Clinton Township shop, and there is no travel fee.
