Paver Repair & Re-Sanding — Marine City, Michigan
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Marine City
Three things wear on Marine City pavers: roots of the mature maples and beeches the city's master plan names, rain standing on flat ground that drains slowly in places, and roof water spilling onto the joints. We find which one is at work, correct what we can beneath the pavers and relay the same ones.

In Marine City
The master plan calls Marine City wooded and names its mature American beech and its sugar, red and silver maples. Where one stands beside a walk or patio, its roots can push the paving up as they thicken. A run of pavers by a trunk that rises a little more each year, and is still raised in July with no frost in the ground, is more likely a root than frost. Pavers take this better than a poured walk, because they can be lifted and relaid instead of broken out. We relay them, but we do not cut roots.
Water is the second cause. The city is flat, at about 584 feet, from the older grid between the Belle River and the St. Clair River out to the homes along West Blvd. One of the two soil groups the plan maps there is very poorly to somewhat poorly drained over a clayey to loamy subsoil, and the plan says many areas west of M-29 lack adequate storm drainage. Rain with nowhere to go stands on a patio, and a base that stays saturated is on CMHA's list of reasons pavers sink. A puddle in the same place after every storm marks the dip.
Roof water is the third. CMHA's cleaning guide notes that downspouts and eave drip lines concentrate runoff, and concentrated runoff carries joint sand away. The Stick Style and Queen Anne houses the plan inventories near city hall have steep, compound rooflines that can shed water at several corners, and where that water lands on pavers it can empty a line of joints. Joint sand is what passes load from paver to paver, and CMHA calls it essential to the surface's stiffness, so emptied joints let the pavers loosen.
How we work
Mark the Water, Check for Roots, Then Relay

On site, a string line separates a true dip from a shadow, and a look at nearby trunks tells root lift from settling. The pavers in the area are pried out, cleaned and stacked in sequence. A sunken base is rebuilt with compacted base material rather than more bedding sand, an inch of fresh bedding is screeded over it, and the pavers return to their own places, set slightly proud so compaction seats them. Over a root, they go back without the root being cut, so the walk may keep a slight rise there. Joint sand comes last: the old sand cleared out at least an inch and a half deep, polymeric sand swept into dry joints and compacted until a finger no longer sinks in, the faces cleaned off and the joints showered from the low point.
Shortcuts Under the Maples
Pouring bedding sand into a dip that holds water leaves the soft base under it, so the puddle returns. Plain sand swept back under a downspout washes out the way the last batch did. Polymeric sand on a shaded patio that has not dried clings to damp faces and can leave a haze, which is why the makers insist on dry joints. A narrow pressure-washer tip aimed into the joints strips the sand and can undermine the pavers.
When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Marine City
Base and edge repairs can go ahead whenever the ground is not frozen. Re-sanding needs a dry stretch: the makers want paver tops, sides and joints dry, one of them a full day after rain, and temperatures above freezing for 48 hours after install. Under mature trees pavers dry slowly, so shade matters as much as the forecast. By the National Weather Service's count for southeast Michigan, the growing season is over in October. If the joints keep sprouting weeds, that is seed blown into the sand, not growth from below.
Questions, answered
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Marine City: FAQs
A maple root has lifted part of our walk. Can you flatten it?
We can lift and relay that stretch without cutting the root, so the walk may keep a slight rise where it runs. Ask an arborist whether the root can be cut at all; Iowa State's extension service warns that cutting a major root can cause dieback or leave the tree unstable. Pavers suit that spot better than concrete: as the root grows, they can come up and go back down.
Water stands on our patio after every rain. Is that the pavers or the yard?
Either, or both. A puddle in one spot means the pavers there have dropped, from a base that settled, stays saturated or sits on bedding laid too thick, and rebuilding the base there corrects the dip. If the yard around the patio holds water too, that is a drainage problem, which we do not fix, and the estimate says so.
Sand keeps washing out of the joints below our downspout. What helps?
Polymeric sand at full depth. CMHA says stabilized joint sand stays put better at downspouts and under eaves, where water concentrates, and the sand makers want the old sand cleared to at least an inch and a half first. Keeping the gutters clear helps too: when they overflow, roof water pours off the eave and empties joints along the drip line as well.
What photos help you quote a paver repair?
A wide shot of the walk or patio, close-ups of the raised or sunken spots and empty joints, and if you can, one taken in the rain showing where water stands. A straightedge across a dip helps too. Repairs have no published price; a written estimate follows within 24 hours, from photos or an in-person look, with no travel fee.
