A City Planned in Brick

Louise Lathrup Kelley was one of a handful of women developing whole communities in 1920s America, and she planned this one with unusual discipline: single-family homes of low-profile design, faced in brick, stone, or stucco, with attached garages, on a winding boulevard layout that stands apart from every neighboring grid. The first house went up the same year she platted the village, development continued into the 1960s, and the whole enterprise was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 as the Lathrup Village Historic District. The masonry mandate made a maintenance city.
