Paver Repair & Re-Sanding — Keego Harbor, Michigan

Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Keego Harbor

On a cottage lot squeezed between the lake and the road, a paver drive is only as wide as the lot allows, so tires run close to its outer rows. That edge, and the restraint holding it, is the first place to look when those rows start to spread, tip or lose sand.

In Keego Harbor

Keego Harbor fits about half a square mile of cottage lots along Orchard Lake Rd and the Cass Lake frontage, and the drives off Willow Beach St and the side streets follow the lots: narrow and sometimes shared. On a drive that tight, tires run close to the outer pavers. That outer band is where, according to the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association (CMHA), a failing edge shows itself: joints widening at the perimeter, edge pavers rotating or settling, and joint and bedding sand working loose. Repeated traffic speeds it along.

The restraint along the edge is what holds it. For a home drive, CMHA's options run from poured concrete curbs and precast or cut-stone edging to aluminum edging and plastic edging made for pavers, with steel used only over a rigid base, and spiked edging has to be pinned into compacted base. When a cottage footprint gets a rebuild and a new paver drive, the edge detail is hidden once the pavers are down, yet it decides whether the outer rows stay put.

Edges are one part of paver repair, which also covers releveling sunken or heaved pavers, replacing broken ones and polymeric re-sanding. A drive that is sound but dull needs paver restoration instead, and the estimate says which.

How we work

Resetting an Edge That Has Spread

The edge pavers and the rows inside them come up first, lifted with an extractor or pried out with two screwdrivers, and stacked beside the drive to go back in the original pattern. Opening the edge shows what failed: edging pulled loose, spikes in soil, a restraint sitting on the sand, or base that stops short of the edging. Where part of the old restraint still holds, only the failed section is replaced.

Replacement paver edging is spiked into compacted base, and by CMHA's rule of thumb the base runs past the spikes at least as far as the base is thick: 6 inches for a 6-inch base. Low base is built back with compacted base material, never extra sand. Fresh bedding sand is screeded to an even depth, the pavers go back along string lines, and a plate compactor passes over at least twice, overlapping pavers that never moved. Sand is then compacted in until the joints take no more, and the reset rows finish 1/16 to 1/8 inch above the field to allow for settling.

If joints elsewhere on the drive have dropped, they are cleaned out to at least 1½ inches, dried, filled with polymeric sand, compacted twice and left roughly 1/8 inch shy of the paver tops.

Edge Fixes That Don't Hold

Tamping soil against tipped edge pavers gives them nothing firm to push against, and traffic walks the row back out; CMHA says soil is never a suitable restraint. Landscape bed edging lacks the lateral support to hold pavers tight, which is why CMHA calls it unacceptable. It advises against timber, which warps and rots, and against any restraint set on top of the bedding sand.

A thin layer of polymeric sand over old sand in widened edge joints peels and flakes; the makers call for at least 1½ inches of open joint filled with one material. And a narrow pressure-washer tip run along the edge strips the sand holding the row together. CMHA calls for a wide, low-angle spray on pavers.

When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Keego Harbor

Reset a lifted or tipped edge before the snow comes. CMHA says pavers standing more than 1/8 inch above their neighbors should be repaired ahead of winter, because shovels and plows catch them, and a narrow drive gets cleared to its edges. Shovel diagonally to the pattern; a plastic blade scratches less. Nothing gets built on frozen ground, and polymeric sand wants dry pavers plus 48 hours above freezing, so late-fall repairs follow the forecast.

Questions, answered

Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Keego Harbor: FAQs

The pavers along one side of our drive are tipping outward. Why?

That pattern points to the edge restraint. CMHA describes it as joints widening along the outer edge and edge pavers rotating or settling, mostly in the outer one to two feet, with traffic making it worse. The repair is to fix or replace the restraint, reset the pavers beside it, then compact, refill the joints and compact again.

Our drive is shared with the house next door. Can you repair just our side?

Usually, yes. CMHA's method repairs only the area that shows distress, so a sound half can stay. Mention the shared drive with your photos and tell your neighbor before work starts, since the compactor passes overlap onto pavers that never moved and can reach a little past the middle. The written estimate lists what is being repaired.

Do we need all-new edging, or can some of the old edging stay?

Whatever is still doing its job stays. CMHA's method removes only the failed section of restraint and plans how the replacement connects to what remains, so straight, tight runs of plastic or aluminum paver edging are left in place. Landscape bed edging, timber or bare soil gets replaced with a restraint CMHA accepts.

How do we get a price for paver repair in Keego Harbor?

Send photos of the problem areas, or ask for a visit, and the written estimate reaches you within 24 hours. Repairs carry no published price, because two drives with the same symptom can fail for different reasons underneath. Keego Harbor is about 38 minutes from our Clinton Township shop, with no travel fee, on the same terms as Sylvan Lake or Orchard Lake Village.
