Paver Repair & Re-Sanding — Holly, Michigan
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Holly
Holly sits on rolling ground, and on a slope rain runs across a paver walk and can carry joint sand with it. Once an edge restraint gives way, the field starts to spread. We reset sunken and shifted pavers, rebuild failed edges, replace broken pavers and re-sand with polymeric.

In Holly
Holly laid its first brick street on Battle Alley in 1910, and the village and township still mix eras: Victorian lots near the Holly Hotel, postwar infill, and acreage on the hills toward Holly State Recreation Area and Mt. Holly. On rolling ground, slope shapes how pavers fail. The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) recommends stabilized joint sand on slopes steeper than 7% and says surfaces that take heavy rain or concentrated flow hold their sand better with it, because moving water is one of the ways joints empty.
Edges are the other weak point. A restraint holds the pavers tight and keeps them from spreading under traffic and freeze-thaw. When one fails, the joints within a foot or two of the edge widen, the outer pavers rotate or settle, and sand escapes through the gaps. CMHA accepts precast concrete or cut stone, plastic or aluminum edging made for pavers, steel over a rigid base, and poured concrete curbs, with spikes driven into the base.
Broken pavers are the third repair: the damaged ones come out, the bedding under them gets checked, and replacements are set, compacted and sanded in.
How we work
Edge First, Then the Field

On a walk that has spread, the repair starts at the edge. We take up the failed restraint and the pavers beside it, check that the base runs out past the restraint at least as far as the base is deep, add and compact base where it doesn't, and set a new restraint spiked into that base. The pavers go back tight against it, a little proud of their neighbors, and are compacted with the field.
Then the joint sand. On a slope we use polymeric, swept into joints cleaned out to at least 1 1/2 in., compacted twice and finished 1/8 in. below the surface, with the pavers fully dry first. Watering starts at the bottom of the slope, the low point the sand makers specify, and keeps the joints evenly wet without flooding them. A probe then confirms the sand set through its depth. The paver repair page walks through each stage.
Edging and Sanding Mistakes on a Slope
Plastic landscape edging and timbers look like they hold a patio, but CMHA rules out that edging and bare soil as restraints and doesn't recommend timber, which warps and rots. It also wants spikes driven into the base, never into soil. Troweled concrete along the edge appears in CMHA's guidance only for places where the ground doesn't freeze, so it isn't one of CMHA's options for a Michigan yard. On the sand side, polymeric swept onto damp pavers or ahead of rain sticks to the faces and hazes, and the makers warn against mixing it with leftover regular sand. A white bloom after watering can also be efflorescence carried up by the activation water, which our efflorescence guide covers.
When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Holly
Sloped walks are worth checking during a spring rain, when you can see where water runs and where sand is washing out, and again in late summer or early fall, as CMHA suggests. Edge work and resets need unfrozen ground, and polymeric needs dry pavers and roughly 48 hours above freezing with sprinklers off, so late spring through early fall is the working season. Any paver that sits more than 1/8 in. above its neighbors on a walk or drive is worth lowering before snow, because shovels and plows catch raised edges.
Questions, answered
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Holly: FAQs
Can you make replacement pavers look like the ones we have?
We can't promise replacement pavers will look like the ones you have. Traffic and weather wear the surface and shift the color over the years, some colors are no longer made, and even spares stored in the garage can differ from pavers that have been in service. When an area is lifted and relaid, CMHA suggests scattering the new pavers among the old rather than grouping them, which softens the difference.
Our walk runs downhill to the street. Is polymeric sand the right choice?
Usually. CMHA calls joint stabilization generally optional, but it recommends it on slopes over 7% and says it helps joints hold wherever water concentrates. It adds no structural strength, so a sunken stretch gets reset first. The joints are then cleaned out to at least 1 1/2 in. and filled full depth with one material, because polymeric laid over old sand peels.
Some of our pavers have hairline cracks. Do they need replacing?
Not necessarily. A tight hairline crack generally doesn't affect how a paver performs, and those can stay. A paver that has broken apart or lost a corner should be replaced, and a missing one as soon as possible. Several cracked pavers in one area can mean the bedding or base under them is weak. In that case we lift the area and check before setting new ones.
How do we get an estimate out in Holly?
Send photos: a wide shot of the walk or patio and close-ups of the edges, low spots and broken pavers. Or ask us to come look. Holly is about 52 minutes from our shop in Clinton Township, we charge no travel fee, and the written estimate comes back within 24 hours. Repairs have no set rate, so the estimate lists each one, whether the house is in the village or out along Grange Hall Rd.
