Paver Repair & Re-Sanding — Armada, Michigan
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Armada
On the village blocks around Main St and Fulton St, paver walks and patios sit under mature trees. Seed and leaf litter collect in the joints, the seed sprouts, and tree roots can push a section of walk up from below. We reset what moved and refill the joints with polymeric sand.

In Armada
Armada's village is less than a square mile of grid under mature trees, and a paver walk or patio there lives with what the canopy drops. CMHA (the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association) lists keeping out organic matter and seed among the jobs of stabilized joint sand, and notes that weeds sprout from seed caught in the joint, not from the base. Joint sand also passes load between pavers, and CMHA counts it as essential to their interlock, so an emptied joint is more than a looks problem: the pavers around it are losing the grip that holds them in place.
Roots work on the same walks from below. Iowa State University Extension notes that tree roots push up paving and that pavers cope with root growth better than poured concrete. A raised paver section can be lifted, its base and bedding rebuilt, and the same pavers reset in their pattern. The root itself we leave alone. The same guidance warns that losing a major root can bring crown dieback or death, so that call belongs to you and an arborist.
Lots along the East Branch of Coon Creek add water. That ground stays damp and shaded, and a base that stays saturated is one reason CMHA gives for pavers sinking, beside a base never compacted well, an overly deep sand bed and washed-out bedding. Water is also one of the three things frost heave needs. Which cause sits under a given dip shows once the pavers come up.
How we work
Fix the Pavers First, Then the Joints

A string line goes across the paving first, because shadows can make a dip look deeper than it is. A paver extractor or two screwdrivers frees the first paver in each raised or sunken section; the rest are scraped clean and stacked as they come up. Low spots in the base get compacted base material, never extra sand, then roughly an inch of new concrete sand is screeded over the base. The pavers go back in pattern a hair above their neighbors and are plate-compacted at least twice, with passes running onto pavers that never moved. Cracked ones are swapped in the same pass. Then the joints are cleaned out 1½ inches deep and, once everything is dry, filled with polymeric sand, compacted, topped off and compacted again until a fingertip will not press in. The sand sits about 1/8 inch below the tops, the dust is blown off, and the joints are shower-watered from the low side.
How Shaded Walks Get Fixed Twice
Polymeric sand spread on pavers still damp from a shaded morning clings to the faces and can cure into a haze. A polymeric top-up over half-empty joints forms a thin skin that peels and flakes, so the old sand has to come out first. A narrow pressure-washer tip run down the joints to blast out weeds takes the sand too, and the Brick Industry Association warns that aggressive washing can undermine pavers. Packing more bedding sand under a sunken spot leaves the base low, and the dip shows through again. Cutting a root to flatten a walk can trade a level path for a dying tree.
When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Armada
Lifting and resetting wait for thawed ground, and CMHA rules out frozen or saturated bedding sand. Joint sand asks more: dry pavers, about two days above freezing and, by one maker's rule, 24 hours after rain or cleaning before sand goes in. On a creek-side lot where the sun reaches the patio late, that dry window is narrow, so summer gives the most room. The National Weather Service counts October as the end of Southeast Michigan's growing season, and fall joint work follows the forecast. Check the paving during or just after a spring rain, since standing water outlines any low spot, and again in late summer.
Questions, answered
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Armada: FAQs
A tree root has raised part of our front walk. Can it be leveled?
Yes. The raised pavers come up, the base and bedding are rebuilt, and the pavers are relaid level. We do not cut or remove roots, since cutting a major root can kill the tree. A root left in place keeps growing, so a reset over it may need redoing in later years. If the tree matters to you, talk to an arborist first.
Why do weeds keep coming up between our patio pavers?
Seed lands in the joints and sprouts there; the weeds are not coming up through the base. CMHA lists stabilized joint sand as a help against weeds, so we clear the joints to 1½ inches and refill them full depth with polymeric sand. Our guide to weeds in polymeric sand covers what keeps them away.
Do the joints need polymeric sand, or will regular sand do?
CMHA calls joint stabilization generally optional, recommends it on slopes over 7 percent, and says it helps under downspouts and eaves, on wide joints and on paving that gets cleaned hard. It does not top up with polymeric: a plain-sand joint that drops more than 1/2 inch gets dry masonry sand. When we re-sand, one material goes in, full depth.
How do we get a price for paver repair in Armada?
Send photos: one wide shot, then close-ups of the low spots, loose edges and empty joints. If the job needs an in-person look, we will say so. Either way, you get a written estimate within 24 hours. Paver repair has no published price because the work depends on what failed underneath, and Armada carries no travel fee, the same as Romeo or Richmond.
