The old trees over the blocks around Main St and Fulton St drop in two waves. Why a Blowout Is Not a Clearing

Blowing a run out from the roof looks fast and leaves the packed mat at the outlet, which is the part that was causing the overflow. The debris also ends up on freshly washed siding and in the beds. Scooping and leaving the downspouts unflushed has the same result. The damage version is a ladder leaned directly on the gutter: the lip creases, the pitch flattens, and water pools in the low spot until the seam opens. On old fascia, a pulled spike leaves a hole that feeds rot behind the board.

Timing It Right

Late fall is the clearing that matters most, after the last leaves are down and before the first hard freeze, because a full gutter holds water that turns to ice and lifts the run off its hangers. Late spring is the second, once the maple seeds have finished. On the farm properties, a pass after harvest is worth adding.
