Paver Repair & Re-Sanding — Sterling Heights, Michigan
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Sterling Heights
A paver walk or patio held in by lawn, or by edging meant for flower beds, tends to come apart from the outside in: the border row tips, the joints beside it open, and sand drains out the side. We rebuild the edge on a proper restraint, relay the pavers it let go of, and refill the joints so the surface locks up again.

Pavers stay tight only while something solid holds the perimeter. The edge-restraint guidance from the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) calls for a restraint along every outside edge and wherever pavers meet a different material, so the field cannot creep outward under feet, tires and each winter's freezing and thawing.
That matters across the 1960s plats between Dequindre Road and Hayes Road, where many drives and walks are still the original poured concrete, now 40 to 60 years old. A paver walk or patio added to one of those lots can meet concrete along one side and lawn along another, and both lines are edges that need holding. Where a restraint was skipped or has let go, border pavers rotate or drop and sand washes onto the grass. A dropped border also holds a puddle after rain, and the flat lake-plain clay under the city is slow to take it away.
Wide border joints are more than cosmetic. Joint sand carries load between pavers, and as joints widen the surface loses stiffness. The repair is a rebuilt edge, not fresh sand in gaps that will open again. Cleaning and sealing are a separate service, brick paver restoration.
How we work
Restraint First, Then the Border Rows

We take up the border row and the pavers behind it as far in as the joints have opened, cleaning each one and stacking them in order. With the edge exposed, we check what the old restraint was sitting on. A restraint belongs on the compacted base, and CMHA's rule of thumb is that the base reaches past it by at least the base's own depth, so a six-inch base runs six inches beyond the spikes; where it stops short, the base is extended and compacted first. The new restraint goes down with its spikes driven into that base, never into soil. Fresh bedding sand is screeded, the pavers return in their original pattern along a string line, and the plate compactor runs over the rebuilt strip and onto the undisturbed field. Joint sand is swept in and compacted until the joints take no more. Border pavers that are broken through are replaced along the way.
Edging That Won't Hold a Paver Field
Flexible plastic edging sold for garden beds can pass for paver edging, but CMHA says that kind of landscape edging is not an acceptable restraint because it cannot hold the pavers tight. Soil backfill never is, and timber is not recommended because it warps and rots. The same guidance rules out a restraint set on top of the bedding sand, and spikes driven into soil rather than the base. CMHA mentions a troweled concrete edge only for areas where the ground does not freeze, and Michigan ground does. And re-sanding wide border joints without fixing the edge refills a gap that is still opening, so the new sand follows the old.
When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Sterling Heights
Spring is when an edge gives itself away: once the frost is out, look along the borders for joints that widened over winter, and check again in late summer. Base work waits for thawed ground, and polymeric sand needs dry pavers and about two days above freezing after it goes in. Riverside streets near Dodge Park and the Clinton River stay damper than the open grid, which can push a re-sand back a day after rain. A border paver standing more than an eighth of an inch proud should be reset before snow, because shovels and snow blowers catch that lip.
Questions, answered
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Sterling Heights: FAQs
Why are the joints along my patio's edge wider than the rest?
Joints widening along the outer edge are the sign CMHA's maintenance guide gives for lost edge restraint, whether the restraint failed or was never installed. Without a solid border, pavers creep outward under foot traffic and through each freeze and thaw, and CMHA notes the damage shows most within a foot or two of the edge: wider joints, tipping border pavers, sand escaping. Refilling those joints alone will not hold. The restraint has to be repaired or replaced and the border pavers relaid.
Is the plastic lawn edging around my pavers enough?
Not if it is the flexible edging sold for garden beds. CMHA rules out landscape edging made for planting beds and soil backfill, and advises against timber. Plastic edging made for pavers qualifies, as do aluminum, precast concrete or cut stone, and poured concrete curbs, provided the restraint sits on the compacted base and its spikes go into the base rather than the soil beside it.
Some border pavers are cracked. Will new ones match the rest?
Not perfectly, and we will not promise they will. Pavers in service weather and shift color, so a new paver, or even a spare from the original pallet, can look fresher than its neighbors. Every sound paver goes back in, and where new ones are needed we spread them out rather than grouping them. A tight hairline crack generally does not affect how a paver performs and can stay.
How is paver repair priced in Sterling Heights?
By the job, once we have seen it, because an edge rebuild depends on how far the field has spread and what the base looks like at the border. Photos are often enough to start; some jobs need a visit. Either way a written estimate arrives within 24 hours, with the restraint, the relaid pavers and the re-sand on separate lines, and there is no travel fee.
