Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in St. Clair

St. Clair earned its 26th year as a Tree City USA in 2024, and on its older blocks a street tree and a paver walk beside it share the same ground. Roots lift pavers, seed lodges in the joints, and a walk that rocks underfoot needs its pavers taken up and reset rather than another sweep of sand.

In St. Clair

About half the city's housing went up before 1960 and a quarter before 1940, by Census estimates, and the oldest platted streets sit near downtown and the Pine River. Roots push paving up as they grow. Pavers tolerate that better than poured concrete, and a lifted section can come up and go back down. We do no root work: cutting a major root can kill the tree, and if it belongs to a street tree, the city is the one to ask before anyone trims it. A root keeps thickening, so a section relaid over one can lift again.

CMHA, the concrete paver trade association, lists organic matter, seeds and insects among the things that pull joint sand out, and weeds start from windblown seed caught in the joints, not from the base. A downspout aimed at a walk or an eave that drips onto a patio can concentrate enough water to wash a joint out, and CMHA names those spots as places for stabilized sand. A gutter packed with leaves spills over along the eave, so gutter cleaning is part of keeping the joints full.

The river adds its own risk. In January 2022 the National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for an ice blockage on the St. Clair River that named the city among the places expected to flood, and low patios near the water can take river water in an event like that. Moving water can carry bedding sand out from under pavers, and a saturated base is on CMHA's list of causes for a dip, so a riverfront patio off Riverside Ave or River Rd deserves a look once the ground dries.

How we work

Resetting a Walk Lifted by Roots

The pavers over and around the lifted area come out, the first one pried free with an extractor or two screwdrivers, and each is scraped clean and stacked beside the opening. The root stays, so the walk may not go back dead flat: Iowa State's extension service suggests letting a walk rise gently over a root rather than cutting it, and the base around the root is shaped and compacted so the rise is gradual. Bedding sand is never piled thicker to fill a hollow, since the unevenness works back through it. Fresh bedding is screeded, the pavers return in their original pattern along string lines, slightly proud of their neighbors but never more than an eighth of an inch, and the plate compactor goes over them at least twice, lapping onto the pavers that stayed put. Before re-sanding, leaf grit and old sand come out of the surrounding joints to at least an inch and a half, so the polymeric sand goes in as one material.

What Goes Wrong on Tree-Lined Walks

Cutting the root to flatten the walk fixes the pavers by putting the tree at risk. Blasting leaf litter out of the joints with a narrow tip takes the joint sand with it and can undermine the pavers; CMHA's cleaning guidance calls for a wide, low-angle spray. Polymeric sand swept over joints still half full of old sand and grit forms a crust that peels. Shimming a rocking paver with a handful of sand under one corner leaves the cause where it was, and sealing a loose walk to hold it together does nothing for what is under it.

When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in St. Clair

Re-sanding waits for pavers dried through on top, on the sides and in the joints, a full day after rain or a rinse, and shade can stretch that. Sprinklers go off, the sand needs 48 hours above freezing after it goes in, and damp pavers or humid air can leave a polymeric haze. Repairs fit spring once the ground has thawed, or late summer and early fall. Southeast Michigan's growing season ends in October, and base work stops when the ground freezes.

Questions, answered

Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in St. Clair: FAQs

Will you cut the root that lifted our walk?

No. Losing a major root can kill a tree, and for a street tree the city is the one to ask before anyone trims it. We lift the pavers, shape and compact the base so the walk rises gradually over the root, then relay and compact them. A root keeps thickening, though, so a reset section can lift again.

Our joints are full of weeds. Is that a repair or a re-sand?

If the pavers sit flat and tight, a re-sand. Weeds sprout from windblown seed caught in the joints, so the joints are cleared at least an inch and a half deep and refilled with polymeric sand. Pavers that rock or dip are reset first. Our article on weeds in polymeric sand explains why a few can still appear.

Can high water on the river damage a paver patio?

It can. Water moving across a patio can wash bedding sand from under the pavers, and a base that stays saturated can settle. Once the ground dries, a string line pulled across the patio shows the real dips, since shading alone makes some look worse than they are.

How is paver repair priced in St. Clair?

Photos or a visit both work, and the written estimate arrives within 24 hours. Repair carries no published price, since a root-lifted walk, a dipped patio and a re-sand take different labor. The shop on Hall Road is about 35 minutes away by I-94 and Fred W. Moore Hwy, with no travel fee. Cleaning and sealing can go on the same estimate as paver restoration.
