Paver Repair & Re-Sanding — Marysville, Michigan

Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Marysville

A paver standing more than an eighth of an inch above its neighbors is easy to miss in July and easy to catch with a shovel in January. The Port Huron weather station just north of Marysville records about 35 inches of snow in a normal year, so raised and sunken pavers are worth resetting before the ground freezes.

Pavers rise and fall because of what sits under them. CMHA, the trade group that now publishes the old ICPI paver guides, traces most raised sections to frost heave, which needs freezing weather, a frost-susceptible soil and a supply of water at once. Ice lenses form as water wicks up to the freezing front, and the harm comes from uneven lift. A thaw works from the top down and traps meltwater above still-frozen ground, so the soil softens and a refreeze adds to the lift. Ground lifted by frost can settle back as it thaws, so we judge a heaved section once the thaw is over.

Sunken spots have other causes: a base or soil that settled, often from too little compaction when it went in, a base that stays saturated, bedding sand spread too thick, or bedding that washed out. At the border, a loose edge restraint lets pavers creep outward. Joints that have only lost sand need a re-sand, and polymeric sand never goes in as a top-up; its makers want the joints cleared at least an inch and a half deep first. When the pavers also need cleaning and a sealer, that belongs to paver restoration.

CMHA suggests fixing anything more than an eighth of an inch proud before winter, since shovels and plow blades catch those edges. At a condominium such as Wildwood Condominium or Greenview Condominium on Michigan Ave, or one of the associations along River Rd near the St. Clair River, the walks may be the association's to repair, and the board is the one to send photos.

How we work

Lift It, Fix the Base, Then Re-Sand

A string line across the trouble spot comes first, because shading makes a shallow dip look deeper than it is. The first paver comes out with an extractor or a pair of screwdrivers, or is broken out with a chisel if it is locked tight, and the rest are scraped clean and stacked beside the opening. With the surface open, the cause shows in the bedding, the base, the soil below or a restraint that slid. A low base is built back with compacted base material, never extra bedding sand, which lets the unevenness show through. New bedding is screeded at about an inch, the pavers go back in their own pattern a sixteenth to an eighth of an inch high, and a plate compactor makes two or more passes running onto the untouched pavers. Then the joints take polymeric sand on dry pavers, compacted, refilled and compacted again, finished an eighth below the tops, blown clean and showered in from the low end.

Shortcuts That Show Up by Spring

Sweeping polymeric sand over joints that still hold old sand leaves a thin cap that peels and flakes, and the makers say never to mix it with other sand. Packing extra sand under one sunken paver asks the bedding to make up for a low base, and the unevenness reflects back through. Relaying pavers on frozen ground, which CMHA rules out, sets them on a surface that moves at the thaw. Sealing first does nothing for a base that has settled, and sealed pavers still have to come up. Re-sanding along an edge that has let go loses the new sand out the side.

When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Marysville

Base work needs ground with no frost in it, and polymeric sand needs dry pavers, a dry forecast and 48 hours above freezing once it is in, with a day's wait after rain. In spring, repairs start once the frost is out and a heaved section has had its chance to settle; the Port Huron station's median last 32-degree night is April 19. Fall is the window for edges that would meet a shovel. If the repaired area will be sealed later, the sand's label sets the wait before sealing.

Questions, answered

Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Marysville: FAQs

A paver by our front step sticks up after winter. Can it be tapped back down?

Tapping it down leaves the cause in place. A paver that rose has something under it that moved, usually ground lifted unevenly by frost. Once the ground has thawed, the repair lifts that paver and the ones around it, brings the base and bedding back to grade, relays them slightly high and compacts them in so they lock with their neighbors.

Will a replacement paver match the cracked one?

We do not promise a color match. Pavers in service fade and wear under weather and traffic, so a new one from the same line can look different, and some colors are discontinued. CMHA suggests scattering replacements through the area. Tight hairline cracks generally do not affect performance, though a crack can point to weak support underneath, which the repair checks.

How should we shovel or plow a paver drive?

Diagonally to the joints, as CMHA's maintenance guide suggests, so the blade does not catch paver edges; a plow also needs its shoes set so the blade does not scrape the surface. For deicers, our guide to ice melt for pavers covers which ones CMHA rates least harmful.

How is paver repair priced in Marysville?

From photos or a visit, with a written estimate within 24 hours. There is no published price, because a reset edge, a releveled entry walk and a full re-sand are different jobs. A condominium board can ask for the estimate broken out by location. The shop on Hall Road in Clinton Township is about 40 minutes up I-94, with no travel fee.
