Pavers stay tight only while something holds the perimeter. CMHA's edge-restraint guide calls for a restraint along every outside edge and wherever pavers meet another material, because without one the field spreads under traffic and freeze-thaw. When a restraint lets go, the signs gather within a foot or two of it: joints widening, edge pavers tipping outward or settling, sand spilling into the grass. Every side that ends in open lawn depends on its restraint alone.
The ground adds a second problem. The township plan describes flat lake-plain clay and silt whose soils all carry limits from high water tables and poor drainage, and respondents to the township's 2025 master plan survey raised ditch drainage and flooded properties. A saturated base is one of the causes CMHA lists for sinking pavers. The plan also notes a strip of sandy former shoreline along Broadbridge Rd and Marsh Rd, so conditions change from one address to the next, and the cause gets checked at each.
Lots come in two kinds. Along M-29 (River Rd), the hamlets of Martindale Beach, Avalon Beach, Cherry Beach, Broadbridge Station and Roberts Landing line the St. Clair River. Inland, homes are spread across farmland along roads such as Shea Rd, with Beaubien Creek and the Marine City Drain running north to south through the clay. Drainage and grading are outside what we do; when either is behind the movement, the estimate says so.
How we work
Opening the Border and Anchoring It Again

The repair starts by lifting the outer rows that have tipped or drifted, back to where the pavers still sit tight, and stacking them in order. Edging that fails CMHA's guide comes out: landscape bed edging, timber, and any restraint spiked into soil or set on the bedding sand. A border held only by packed soil gets a real restraint. Where the base stops short, compacted base material extends it past the new restraint at least as far as the base is thick, and the restraint is set on the base and spiked into it. Fresh bedding is screeded, the border rows return to their pattern along a string line, slightly above their neighbors, and a plate compactor makes at least two passes that overlap the undisturbed field. A sunken spot mid-patio is lifted and its base rebuilt rather than thickened with bedding. The joints come last: old sand dug out at least an inch and a half deep, polymeric swept in once the pavers are dry, compacted and topped until a finger will not sink in, then watered from the low side.
Shortcuts at the Border
Pushing a drifted row back into line and re-staking the same edging into the same soil puts it right back where it failed. Spiking a new plastic restraint through the lawn instead of into compacted base repeats the mistake with new parts. Re-sanding a patio while its border is still open wastes the sand, which keeps escaping where the joints are spreading. Sealing first does not help either: a sealer neither holds an edge nor replaces a missing restraint, and SEK-Surebond's sealing guide lists failed edging among the repairs to finish before sealing.
When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Cottrellville Township
Edge and base work can go ahead on any unfrozen ground, though on wet clay it waits for the soil to firm up after rain. Polymeric re-sanding needs dry paver tops, sides and joints and 48 hours above freezing afterward, and the Weather Service office in Detroit marks October as the end of the local growing season. About one home in ten here is held for seasonal or occasional use, and CMHA's two inspection times fit that calendar: look in spring, in or after a rain, when standing water shows where pavers sit low, then once more in late summer before closing up. If you plan to seal after the repair, read whether sealing pavers is worth it first.
Questions, answered
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Cottrellville Township: FAQs
What kind of edging holds pavers in place?
CMHA's guide lists precast concrete or cut stone, plastic or aluminum edging made for pavers, steel where the base is rigid, and poured concrete curbs. It rules out landscape bed edging, timber and soil backfill. Whatever the type, it never sits on the bedding sand, and any spikes go into compacted base, never into soil.
We open the cottage in May. What should we look for on the walk?
Sand sitting more than half an inch below the paver tops, puddles that linger after rain, joints widening near the edge, edge pavers tipping, and any paver standing proud of the rest by more than an eighth of an inch. Raised edges are worth fixing before the next snow season, because shovels catch them.
Can you repair the patio and then clean and seal it?
Yes, in that order. Repairs go first, then brick paver restoration cleans, re-sands and seals over a sound surface; the restoration is priced on its own page. The joint sand's label sets the wait before sealer, from a day or two to several weeks. After we seal, foot traffic stays off for 48 hours and vehicles for 72.
How is a Cottrellville Township repair quoted?
Photos you send, or a look in person, set the quote, and the written estimate comes within 24 hours. Paver repair has no published price, because resetting one edge and releveling a sunken patio are different jobs. Most of the township has a Marine City mailing address, and no address in it pays a travel fee. A seasonal owner can send photos from anywhere and book the work for a dry stretch.
