In Commerce Township
The subdivisions along the Haggerty Connector went up from the 1990s into the 2010s, while houses on the older shorelines of the Lakes Area trace back to lake cottages. Where those houses came with pavers, the paving has been through years of Michigan winters, and the border is the place to start. Edge restraints hold pavers tight, keep traffic from spreading them, and have to stay put through freeze-thaw. When one lets go, the signs gather within a foot or two of the edge: joints that widen, edge pavers that rotate or settle, joint and bedding sand working loose.
CMHA's edge restraint guidance lists what works on a home: precast concrete or cut stone, plastic or aluminum edging made for pavers, steel over a rigid base, and poured concrete curbs. Landscape bed edging, timber and soil backfill are not on that list, and neither is a restraint set on top of the bedding sand. Spikes belong in the compacted base, never in the soil beside it, and the base should run out past the restraint at least as far as the base is thick. Sandy lake-country soil is no exception, and the restraint is the first thing we check.
Broken pavers come next. Tight hairline cracks generally do not affect performance, but a paver broken through, or damage that hints at weak support, is a reason to lift and look. The paver repair page lists the full service, and cleaning and sealing sit on the restoration page.
How we work
Edge First, Field Second, Sand Last

A string line along the border shows how far the edge has spread and where the movement stops. We lift the edge pavers along that run and repair the restraint, or replace a missing or unsuitable one with a listed type anchored in compacted base. The neighboring pavers are reset tight, compacted, refilled and compacted again. A sunken stretch in the field gets the same treatment from the base up, with low spots rebuilt in compacted base material rather than extra bedding sand.
Broken pavers are replaced during the reset. Weathering and wear change how pavers look, so stored spares can differ from the pavers around them, and CMHA advises scattering replacements through the pattern to soften the difference. Once the repairs are done and the pavers are fully dry, the joints are cleaned out to at least 1½ inches and refilled with polymeric sand.
Edge Fixes That Do Not Hold
Sweeping new sand into joints that are opening at the border treats the symptom. The sand keeps escaping out the side until the restraint holds again, which is why repairs, edging included, come before any re-sanding. A strip of garden edging or a row of timbers is not a paver restraint, and spikes driven only into soil miss the base they are meant to anchor in. Some borders get a troweled concrete toe instead, but CMHA lists troweled concrete edging only for places where the ground does not freeze, and Michigan's building code sets a 42-inch frost depth for footings.
When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Commerce Township
Edge, base and paver resets can go in any time the ground is not frozen. Re-sanding waits for a dry spell: one sand maker asks for average air above 35°F for 48 hours with no rain for 12, another for above 32°F over the same two days. If the yard has an irrigation system, zones that reach the pavers stay off while the sand cures. Cure takes 24 hours or longer, the label sets when a car can park, and new joints stay clear of a pressure washer for 30 days.
Questions, answered
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Commerce Township: FAQs
Our association sent a notice about the front walk. Can you put the repair in writing?
Yes. After photos or a visit, the written estimate arrives within 24 hours with each repair on its own line, so it can go to the board, whether that is a subdivision association or Lake Sherwood's. A certificate of our liability and workers' compensation coverage can go to the association too. Our guide to answering an HOA exterior notice covers the rest.
Will the replacement pavers match the rest of the patio?
Not always, and we do not promise it. Pavers in service weather, wear and stain, so they can look different from spares out of storage, and some colors are discontinued. If spares from the original job are in the garage, we use them. Either way, replacements are scattered among the reset pavers instead of grouped in one patch, which reduces the visual impact of the difference.
There is a white film on our pavers since they were re-sanded. What is it?
It may be one of two things. Polymeric dust left on the faces at watering, or sand put down on damp pavers or in humid air, can set into a haze that takes hot water and scrubbing once cured. A white residue can also be efflorescence from the activation water. They clean up differently, so we look before treating it, and our guide to removing efflorescence explains the second.
Is there a travel fee to Commerce Township, and how is repair priced?
No travel fee. Our shop at 21366 Hall Rd in Clinton Township is about 47 minutes away, and the drive costs nothing whether the house is off Union Lake Rd, Wixom Rd or Commerce Rd. Paver repair has no published price: we quote from photos or in person, and the written estimate arrives within 24 hours. Photos of the border and close-ups of any loose pavers help.
