Paver Repair & Re-Sanding — China Township, Michigan

Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in China Township

Most of China Township sits on lake-plain clay and silt that drains poorly, and wet, silty ground is where frost heave does its work. When a paver walk, patio or drive lifts in winter and is still uneven after the thaw, we correct the base beneath it and reset the same pavers.

In China Township

The township's 2004 master plan, drawing on the county soil survey, places lake-plain clay and silt under most of China Township, with soils that drain poorly and hold a seasonal high water table. The same plan names frost heave among the reasons many gravel county roads come out of winter in poor shape. A patio rests on the same kind of ground.

Frost heave takes freezing weather, a frost-susceptible soil and water at once. As the cold works down, water wicks up toward it and freezes into ice layers that push the surface up. Silts are among the most prone soils, clay heaves less severely, and clean, drained gravel rarely heaves. The damage comes from uneven lift: a corner that stays wetter, beside a downspout or on the low side of the lot, can rise farther. Spring thaw runs top-down, so meltwater stays trapped in softened soil until the frozen layer beneath has thawed.

Not every low spot is frost. About 46% of the township's homes went up between 1990 and 2009, so a patio laid with one has seen 15 or more winters. CMHA, the paver industry's technical association, traces most dips to a base that settled, often from poor compaction; too-thick bedding and a saturated base are other causes. It wants at least 4 inches of compacted base under a patio or walk on well-drained soil and 6 under a driveway, more where soils stay wet. Lots near the Belle River valley or Beaubien Creek sit close to mapped wetlands and floodplain. Whether the pavers sit in White Pines Estates off King Rd or behind a home on Wadhams Rd, the repair starts with the layer that gave way. Drainage work is outside what we do; the estimate flags it when water is the cause.

How we work

Thawed Ground, a String Line, Then the Base

Heave is judged after the thaw, since frost-lifted ground can settle back, and no base work goes onto frozen ground. A string line across the area shows which pavers sit high and which sit low; low sun exaggerates dips. The first paver comes out with an extractor or two screwdrivers, and the rest are cleaned and stacked in order. A low base is built back with compacted base material, never extra bedding sand, which lets the unevenness show through again. Fresh bedding goes down about an inch thick, the pavers return to their pattern along string lines a little high, and a plate compactor passes at least twice, overlapping untouched pavers. Joints are cleared to at least an inch and a half, filled with polymeric sand on dry pavers, compacted twice and watered from the low side.

Fixes That Get Ahead of the Thaw

Resetting heaved pavers in early spring, with frost still in the ground, sets them on a layer that is about to move; CMHA rules out building on frozen ground. Shimming a sunken spot with bedding sand fails the other way, because the low base stays low. Polymeric swept over joints half full of old sand peels and flakes, and on spring pavers that have not dried it clings to the faces and can haze. A raised edge left through winter is a catch point for shovels and plow blades once it stands more than an eighth of an inch above its neighbors.

When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in China Township

The season opens once spring thaw is over and the pavers have dried, and it closes with hard freezes. NWS Detroit puts the end of southeast Michigan's growing season in October, and polymeric sand needs dry pavers and 48 hours above freezing after install, so late-fall re-sanding follows the forecast. Base and edge work needs unfrozen ground. Walk the pavers each spring during a rain, when puddles mark the low spots, and again in late summer. In winter, shovel diagonally to the pattern and read which ice melts suit pavers.

Questions, answered

Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in China Township: FAQs

Will resetting a heaved walk keep it from heaving again?

No reset can promise that, because the soil under a reset section still freezes each winter. A reset corrects the base and bedding, relays the pavers level and locks the joints. Where a section lifts year after year, CMHA's fix is a frost-resistant subbase, a rebuild beneath the pavers, and the estimate says if yours has reached that point.

Can you look at it now, or should we wait for spring?

Send photos any time; the written estimate comes back within 24 hours. A dip or a loose edge can be fixed whenever the ground is unfrozen. A heaved section is better judged after the thaw, because some of the lift may settle. A paver standing more than an eighth of an inch high is worth resetting before snow.

Some of our pavers are cracked. Do they all need replacing?

Often not. CMHA says tight hairline cracks generally do not affect performance. Broken pavers come out, and new ones are set, compacted and sanded in. Cracks clustered around a dip can signal weak support, so the base gets checked first. New pavers look different from weathered ones, so in a relaid section they are scattered among the old ones.

How is paver repair priced in China Township?

It has no published price, because a re-sand, a releveled drive and a new edge restraint are different jobs. We quote from your photos or a visit, and the written estimate arrives within 24 hours with no travel fee. A wide shot, close-ups of the problem spots and one with a level laid across the dip help most.
