The short answer
Less than the garden hose it replaces. A hose flows 10–15 gallons per minute; pressure washers run 2–8 GPM and clean several times faster, so total usage drops sharply. A full house wash typically uses a few hundred gallons — comparable to a handful of laundry loads — and a driveway a fraction of that.
The Intuition Is Backwards
A machine that blasts water all day sounds wasteful, and homeowners regularly put off cleaning over it. The arithmetic runs the other way: pressure washing is the efficient way to move water, because pressure substitutes for volume.
An open garden hose flows roughly 10–15 gallons per minute and cleans poorly, so it runs a long time. A consumer pressure washer flows about 1.8–2.5 GPM. Commercial machines run 4–8 GPM and finish the work several times faster. Fewer gallons per minute, far fewer minutes.

For scale, the EPA's WaterSense program pegs average American household use around 300 gallons per day. A full professional house wash lands in the neighborhood of one ordinary day of household use — once every two to three years.
Soft washing uses even less. Most of a house wash is solution dwelling on the siding, not water flowing. The pump only runs during application and rinse, which is why a soft wash frequently uses less water than a homeowner's afternoon of hose-scrubbing that cleans a fraction as well.
Whose Water Is It?
Standard practice in residential work — ours included — is to run from the customer's outdoor spigot, and the numbers above are what that costs: at typical Southeast Michigan water rates, a full house wash draws a few dollars of water. Commercial jobs and properties without adequate supply are served from our onboard tanks, and some jobs (dumpster pads, anything with grease) also involve recovering wash water rather than letting it reach storm drains, which is its own discipline.
Where Water Actually Gets Wasted
- Underpowered equipment — a 1.8 GPM machine grinding for six hours uses more than a 5.5 GPM rig finishing in ninety minutes
- Pressure-only technique — trying to blast off organic growth that chemistry would remove in one pass, then re-doing it months later when it returns
- The re-do itself — the least efficient wash is the one that has to be done twice
Efficiency in this trade is mostly about doing the job correctly once, with the method the surface actually needs — which is the same argument as every other page on this site, applied to your water bill.
The Bottom Line
A professional wash uses roughly a day's worth of ordinary household water every couple of years, drawn at a few dollars' cost, and uses it far more efficiently than a hose ever could. Water usage is a fine question to ask — and one of the few where the honest answer is simply reassuring.
