Christmas Light Installation in Birmingham
Half of Birmingham's rooflines cannot take a staple, a screw, or a careless boot — slate, clay tile, and copper don't forgive. The other half are brand-new builds with crisp modern lines. We light both, each by its own rules.
Birmingham is two lighting jobs wearing one zip code. The prewar streets around Quarton Lake carry 1920s Tudors under original slate and clay tile — roofing that outlives its owners precisely because nobody drives fasteners through it, wearing copper gutters that shed value with every scratch. The teardown era put new construction beside them: hardie-and-stone builds with long clean eave lines and standing-seam accents. A crew that treats those two rooflines the same way is going to damage one of them.
On the prewar stock, everything clips and nothing penetrates — gutter-lip clips sized for copper profiles, ridge attachments that grip without marring, and foot traffic kept off slate entirely, the same discipline that governs how those roofs get cleaned. On the new builds, the game is precision: modern architecture shows every quarter-inch of sag, so runs get tensioned and clipped at tighter intervals to hold a machine-straight line.

Measure Your Birmingham Roofline Right Now
One photo from the street. LightCast finds the roofline, counts the peaks, and prices your install in about a minute — the same math our crews quote from.
Scan Your Roofline. See It Lit. Get a Real Number.
Upload one photo from the street. LightCast finds your roofline automatically, lights it up so you can flip through colors on your own house, and — once you tap a known reference like your garage door — measures the run in real linear feet and prices it from that measurement. It works for permanent lighting installation and seasonal displays alike, and the final number is confirmed on site before anything is ordered.
Didn't get your roofline right?
Switch to manual and tap along your own roofline — it takes about ten seconds.
Two Architectures, Two Methods
Tudor installs follow the architecture instead of fighting it — C9 along the eave lines, the steep front gables outlined to their peaks, warm white doing the work color never could on brick and half-timbering. New-build installs run longer uninterrupted lines with hidden power routing. Birmingham footage varies wildly — compact walkable-street homes from near the $595 minimum, larger Quarton Lake elevations well past 200 feet — and the walkable streets raise the stakes: your display gets viewed from the sidewalk at close range, where clip spacing and cut quality are plainly visible. It's detail work, priced within the same $18–32 per foot as everywhere we install.
What Goes Wrong in Birmingham
Slate cracks under a misplaced ladder or foot, and each broken tile is a chase for matching stock that may not exist. Copper gutters scar under steel clips sized for aluminum. And zip ties around downspouts leave rub marks on patina that only time put there. None of it is dramatic on install day — all of it is visible in March. The fix is boring: correct clips, no roof walking, and an installer whose insurance certificate arrives before their ladder does.
When to Book
Birmingham books on the early side — the walkable blocks light collectively, and nobody wants to be the gap in the streetscape. October reservations get pre-Thanksgiving installs; the shopping-district energy downtown pulls residential timing forward with it. Takedown in January is included, with the same no-penetration care in reverse.
Birmingham Lighting Questions
Can Christmas lights be installed on a slate roof?
Yes — around it, never through it. Slate takes zero fasteners and zero foot traffic, so displays anchor to gutter lips and ridge lines with profile-matched clips while crews work entirely from ladders and standoffs. Done correctly the display is fully reversible; done carelessly, each cracked tile is an expensive hunt for matching century-old stock.
Will clips damage our copper gutters?
Not the right ones. Copper scratches under standard steel clips, so we use coated clips sized to the gutter profile that grip without biting. The patina your gutters spent decades earning stays untouched — and takedown in January leaves no rub marks, which is the real test of a careful install.
Do you design displays or just hang what we hand you?
Both, but Birmingham homes reward design: warm-white C9 following a Tudor's gable geometry reads architectural rather than decorative, and modern builds take crisp minimal lines. We propose the design with the quote — and LightCast's measurement means the proposal already fits your actual roofline, not a generic sketch.
