Paver Repair & Re-Sanding — Algonac, Michigan
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Algonac
Water reaches Algonac pavers three ways: the St. Clair River and canals in a high-water year, rain on flat ground that drains slowly, and damp, overcast weather that keeps a waterside patio from drying. We rebuild the bedding and base that water has washed out or softened, reset the pavers and re-sand only once they are dry.

In Algonac
The city's 2024 master plan places most of Algonac in a FEMA flood zone, with the 100-year zone reaching inland to about Liberty St on the south side and covering the entire eastern shoreline. In June 2019, with record high water, the city declared a local flood emergency and ordered waterfront owners to put up barriers on their property. A mapped zone is a probability, not a record of where water stood, so the pavers are the better guide: emptied joints and new low spots near the water show where it moved through.
Water moving through pavers takes the sand first. CMHA, the hardscape industry's technical association, lists flowing water and concentrated runoff among the causes of lost joint sand, and among the causes of sunken areas it names washed-out bedding sand and a base or soil left saturated. Once the bedding thins, the pavers above it drop into shallow bowls, and once the joints empty, the field loosens.
The ground adds to it. Algonac is flat lake plain at about 581 feet, and the plan describes its soils as mostly somewhat poorly to very poorly drained. From the original Village of Algonac plat outward the lots are small, and along the east and south shores, between M-29 and the river, the grid gives way to canals and stub streets laid out to reach the water; around the Algonac Harbour Club, homes sit on narrow strips between channels. On lots like these, a walk that slopes toward the water carries rain to its low end, where the flow is heaviest.
How we work
Let It Dry, Rebuild the Bedding, Then Lock the Joints

Repairs wait until the water is down and the ground has firmed up. Pavers over a bowl or a washed-out stretch are lifted, cleaned and stacked in sequence, and what lies beneath tells the story: thin or missing bedding, a soft base, or both. A soft or low base gets compacted base material, then an even inch of fresh bedding sand, because bedding piled deeper to fill a low base lets the dip show through again. The pavers go back in their original pattern along string lines and are compacted at least twice, each pass reaching onto the pavers around the patch so it ties in. The old sand is cleared to at least an inch and a half so the polymeric fills from the bottom, and the joints are finished an eighth of an inch below the paver tops, blown clean and watered gently from the low end.
What Washes Back Out
Sweeping new sand over pavers that are still damp undoes a waterfront re-sand. Polymeric sand sticks to a wet face, and damp pavers or humid air can leave a haze that, once cured, takes hot water, a wire brush or a pressure washer to remove. Topping up half-empty joints with polymeric is another mistake, because over old sand it peels and flakes. Rinsing silt off flood-marked pavers with a narrow tip blasts the joints empty and can undermine the pavers, so cleanup uses a wide, low-angle spray. And sealer does nothing for washed-out bedding.
When to Book Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Algonac
Polymeric sand sets the schedule: dry pavers, 48 hours above freezing once it is in, and on one maker's data sheet no rain for 12 hours. Cool, damp, overcast days slow drying and curing, so a breezy, sunny forecast matters more than the date. October ends the growing season across southeast Michigan, according to NWS Detroit, and the re-sanding window narrows with it. Walk the pavers in spring while it rains or just after, and again in late summer, when low joints and standing water show. Our canal-home guide covers the rest of a waterfront exterior.
Questions, answered
Paver Repair & Re-Sanding in Algonac: FAQs
Our walk toward the seawall stood underwater one spring. What should we check now?
Once it has dried, look for joints more than half an inch below the paver tops, low spots where puddles form after rain, and joints opening or pavers tipping along the edges. Pull a string across any dip, since shadows exaggerate them. If the bedding has washed out, the fix is to lift that stretch, rebuild the bedding and base, relay and re-sand.
Polymeric or regular sand on a canal lot?
We re-sand with polymeric, and CMHA says surfaces that take regular heavy rain or concentrated runoff benefit from stabilized joint sand. It adds no strength to a weak base, though, so repairs come first. It also goes in as one material from the bottom of a cleared joint, since a thin layer over old sand comes loose in flakes, and the makers say never to blend it with other sand.
Do you repair seawalls or the drainage on our lot?
No. Seawalls, grading and drainage are outside what we do. We repair the pavers: sunken or heaved sections lifted and reset on a corrected base, broken pavers replaced, edges and restraints reset, joints re-sanded. If water from a downspout, the canal or the yard is behind the damage, the estimate says so, and you can bring in the right trade.
How do you quote a paver repair in Algonac?
Repairs carry no published price, since a re-sand and a rebuilt stretch of walk are different amounts of work. Photos or an in-person visit set the quote, and the written estimate reaches you within 24 hours, with no travel fee. Replacement pavers will not match weathered ones exactly, so new ones are scattered through the patch.
