Why Cedar Punishes Pressure

Wood grain alternates hard latewood and soft springwood, and a pressure stream erodes the soft bands faster than the hard ones — the surface 'furs,' raising a fuzz of broken fibers that catches light, holds dirt, drinks water, and never lies back down. On cedar shakes the damage compounds: shakes are split or sawn thin, their edges are vulnerable, and driven water gets behind them into the wall. A furred cedar wall can be sanded and refinished at enormous cost, or lived with; it cannot be washed back to what it was.
