The short answer
Oil does not sit on concrete — it soaks into the pore structure, which is why pressure washing alone never removes it. Oil needs a degreaser plus hot water to emulsify and lift it out. Rust is a chemical stain requiring an oxalic or acid-based rust remover; degreasers do nothing to it. The two need entirely different treatments.
Why Your Pressure Washer Did Not Work
Nearly every homeowner tries the same thing first: point the pressure washer at the stain, blast it, and watch nothing happen. That result is not a failure of effort or equipment. It is physics.
Motor oil is not sitting on the surface of your driveway. It has wicked down into the capillary pores of the concrete — potentially a quarter-inch deep or more on an unsealed slab that has had a slow leak sitting on it all summer. Pressure removes what is on top of a surface. Oil that has soaked in is below the surface, and no amount of PSI reaches it.
Worse, aggressive pressure on an oil stain frequently drives the oil deeper while simultaneously etching the surrounding concrete — leaving you with the original stain plus a lighter etched halo around it.
Oil Removal: What Actually Works
Removing oil is a chemical problem with a mechanical assist, in that order.
1. Degreaser, and Dwell Time
An alkaline degreaser emulsifies the oil — it breaks the oil into droplets that can be suspended in water and carried away. This is the step that does the work, and it needs time. Applying degreaser and rinsing it thirty seconds later accomplishes nothing.
2. Hot Water
This is the single biggest gap between professional and consumer equipment. Heat reduces the viscosity of oil, which lets it release from the pore structure and be carried out. Commercial units run 180°F or higher. A rental pressure washer produces cold water, which is why the same degreaser that works for us underperforms for a homeowner.
3. Agitation
A stiff brush works the degreaser into the pores rather than leaving it on the surface. On heavy stains this matters as much as the chemical.
4. Repeat
Deep or old stains genuinely require two or three cycles. Each pass pulls more out. Anyone promising a decade-old transmission fluid stain will vanish in one application is overselling.
5. Poultice, for the Worst Cases
For old, deeply penetrated stains, a poultice — an absorbent powder mixed with solvent into a paste, spread over the stain and left to dry under plastic for 24 hours — draws oil back up out of the concrete as the solvent evaporates. It is slow and it looks strange, but on stains nothing else touches, it works.
Honest expectations: a fresh oil stain usually comes out completely. A stain that has been baking into unsealed concrete for five years often lightens by 70–90% rather than disappearing. Any company guaranteeing 100% on an old stain has not seen it yet.
Rust Is a Completely Different Problem
This is where most DIY attempts go wrong. Rust is not a deposit sitting in the pores — it is iron oxide that has chemically reacted with the concrete's minerals and stained it, the way tea stains a mug.
Degreaser does nothing to rust. Pressure does nothing to rust. Scrubbing does nothing to rust. Rust requires an acid that converts the iron oxide into a soluble compound that can be rinsed away — typically oxalic acid for lighter stains, or a stronger commercial rust remover for heavy irrigation staining.
Where Rust Comes From
- Sprinkler systems drawing iron-rich well water — the classic orange arc across a driveway or up a wall
- Metal furniture and planters left on concrete through a season
- Fertiliser containing iron, tracked or spread onto flatwork
- Rebar too close to the surface, which is a structural issue rather than a cleaning one
- Vehicle brake dust and rusting components parked in one spot
Acid work needs care. Applied too strong or left too long, it etches the concrete and leaves a lighter patch that is worse than the rust. It must be neutralized afterwards, and runoff has to be managed away from lawns and storm drains. This is the main reason professional stain removal exists as a distinct service rather than an upsell to a wash.
