The Six Things That Move the Number
1. Square Footage
The largest single factor, and the most obvious. A single-car drive and a three-car drive with a wraparound walkway are different jobs.
2. Surface Type
Plain gray concrete is the baseline. Stamped concrete costs more because it usually takes a film-forming sealer and careful work around the pattern detail. Exposed aggregate costs more because the texture absorbs substantially more sealer than a smooth slab of the same size. Brick pavers cost more again because re-sanding is a separate labor step between cleaning and sealing.
3. Condition
A slab cleaned two years ago needs a wash and a coat. A slab with fifteen years of embedded algae, efflorescence and organic staining needs pre-treatment, dwell time and sometimes a second pass before it is ready to accept sealer at all. Condition is where two identically sized driveways diverge most.
4. Existing Sealer
The biggest variable, and the one that surprises people. If a previous film-forming sealer has failed by clouding, peeling or yellowing, it has to come off before anything new goes down, and the first step is identifying which sealer is already on the slab. Stripping is more involved than sealing, needs chemistry matched to the specific product, and generates slurry that must be collected and disposed of properly. 5. Sealer Type
Penetrating silane and siloxane sealers cost more per gallon, and in Michigan we plan on resealing them every three to five years. Film-forming acrylics cost less upfront and need redoing every two to three years. Over a decade the penetrator usually needs fewer visits, but it cannot deliver the wet look, so on decorative concrete the choice is made by appearance, not cost. 6. Access and Prep
Steep grades, tight side yards, delicate landscaping needing protection, and furniture or planters to move all add time.

Replacing a concrete driveway costs many times what a sealing visit does, and a spalled surface cannot be cleaned or sealed back to its original condition; it has to be patched, resurfaced or replaced. Set against that:

What Should Be in Any Quote
Whoever you use, a written estimate should specify:
- Square footage being treated, measured rather than estimated from the curb
- Whether cleaning is included (it must be — sealer bonds only to clean concrete)
- The specific sealer type, penetrating or film-forming
- Number of coats
- Whether existing sealer needs stripping, and what that costs

A quote that says only "seal driveway — $X" is not enough information to compare against anything.
