Three Eras of Siding Inside One Village

Macomb Power Washing Solutions has worked out of 21366 Hall Road in Clinton Township since June 2022, and New Haven sits about 25 minutes north of that door. The route comes up through Chesterfield Township and crosses 26 Mile Rd, the village line on the south side. Crews run this end of the county on a rotation with Richmond, Macomb Township and Ray Township, so a job here is a scheduled stop rather than a special trip. Nothing is added to the price for the drive.

The village grew in waves you can read from the curb. The oldest blocks sit along Main St, which follows the plank road that once ran between New Haven and Romeo, and the village dates its post office to January 6, 1838, its Grand Trunk Western Railroad depot to 1865 and its incorporation to May 3, 1869. Those streets carry painted wood under trees with a century of growth on them. Between the core and the edges, the mid-century homes run to brick and aluminum. Farther out, the plats built since 2000 are bright vinyl with brick fronts and young poured driveways.

The Salt River crosses the east side of the village, and lots near it hold damp air into the middle of the morning. The ground is flat and drains slowly, which is why Lenox Township around the village stays farmland and wetland, so low north walls and subdivision flatwork sit wet long after a rain. Growth needs that moisture, and it shows on those elevations first. The corridors add a different kind of dirt: traffic film along Gratiot Ave and M-19, winter salt thrown along 26 Mile Rd, and dust off gravel roads and long farm drives that settles on siding and concrete alike.

Water supply splits the work in two. The village runs on regional Detroit and GLWA water with backup wells, so homes inside the mains show little mineral staining. Past the mains, the farm and acreage properties draw from private wells, and that iron leaves orange arcs under spigots and sprinkler heads. Which of the two a property sits on decides the pre-treatment, and it is the first thing we ask about when a New Haven quote comes in.

Old Grid, New Plats, Open Township

On the old village blocks the siding is painted wood, and the canopy over those streets keeps north and east walls shaded most of the day. Paint is the limit there, not dirt. We test a small section for chalk, drop the mix strength, and keep the rinse at garden-hose pressure so nothing lifts at the lap edges. Porch ceilings and column bases usually carry more mildew than the walls do, and they get hand attention.

The mid-century streets between the core and the village edges are brick with aluminum on the gables and upper walls, built out through the years around the time New Haven High School opened in 1968. Aluminum that age has chalked to a flat gray, and washing it without a pre-treatment drags that powder into streaks that show for years afterward. The concrete on these lots was poured decades ago and has never been sealed, so the work there is about cleaning what is sound and leaving the rest alone.

The plats built since 2000 have the brightest siding and the most concrete per lot, and New Haven Elementary opened in 2004 in the middle of that building wave. Their street trees are still young, so north walls get little cover and the first green film shows up about a decade in. The driveways are young enough that a penetrating sealer still has something to protect, and the flat ground under them holds meltwater against the slab all winter. Where a subdivision has an association, its standards set the calendar; the old grid has none.
