Four Steps, in Order

The patio dries a day. Polymeric sand is swept in, compacted, swept again to leave the paver faces clean, and misted in stages so the binder sets without washing out. Any pavers that have settled are lifted and re-bedded on their sand before the sanding. The sealer goes on last, in even passes, once the sand has cured. A typical patio takes two visits over a dry week.
Where Paver Work Goes Wrong
A pressure washer run across the joints strips out whatever sand was left and floats the pavers loose, and the patio that looked clean in the afternoon shifts underfoot by fall. Sealing over efflorescence locks the white haze under the coat, where nothing will reach it. Sanding without a full dry, or misting the polymeric sand too heavily, washes the binder onto the paver faces as a film that takes hours of scrubbing to remove. Sealing with a thick topical product on a canal patio traps moisture from the damp base, so it turns cloudy within a year.
Timing It Right
Paver restoration wants a dry stretch of several days, so June through early September is the season. On the canals the patio needs a dry week after a wet spring before the sand and sealer will set, and late July is the safest bet. The clean alone can happen in any frost-free month, a fair first step in April if the patio is green and the sand and seal wait for summer. Resealing comes around every three to five years.

What is the white haze on my canal patio, and does it come off?
Efflorescence, and yes. Water moving up through the base carries dissolved minerals to the surface, and on a plat a few feet above the canal there is a lot of water moving. An efflorescence cleaner dissolves the deposit, a thorough rinse carries it off, and a breathable sealer slows its return. Sealing over it is the one thing not to do.
