The street trees planted with the ranches are now 60 to 70 years old, and the biggest stand over the oldest blocks near Gratiot and 11 Mile. A north wall under that canopy holds dew until mid-morning, and growth needs a wet surface, so the north side of a brick ranch or an aluminum-trimmed bungalow greens up while the south side stays clean. Roseville has no shore or canal lots, but an east wind carries humidity off Lake St. Clair onto the eastern streets. Flat lake-plain clay drains slowly, so walks and porch steps stay damp long enough to grow moss in the joints.

The brick ranches of the 1950s and 1960s are the bulk of the city. Their mortar joints have taken sixty winters and want a mild solution at rinse pressure, and their aluminum trim, soffits and gutters have oxidized to a chalk that streaks if it is washed carelessly. The drive was poured the same season as the walls and usually runs a few feet from the neighbor's, so a house wash and a driveway cleaning booked together share one setup and one rinse plan.

Condominium and townhome buildings line Gratiot and the Mile roads, vinyl-sided and washed under association contracts rather than one door at a time. Elsewhere the city was platted lot by lot, so associations are few and most owners simply call.
