  1. Clean the gutters and flow-test the downspouts. A gutter can look perfect from the ground while a downspout elbow holds a solid plug.
  2. Extend every downspout at least four to six feet from the foundation. Extensions cost very little and solve a surprising share of basement moisture problems.
  3. Correct the grade so soil falls away from the house — roughly six inches of drop over the first ten feet.
  4. Check the gutter pitch. Sagging sections hold standing water permanently and will not drain regardless of how clean they are.
