The short answer
Book in September or early October; installation runs from late October through November. Michigan weather sets the deadline — once roofs ice over and the ground freezes, installation becomes unsafe and stake-mounted displays become impossible. Companies with limited crews fill their November calendar by mid-October.
The Answer Is Earlier Than Feels Natural
Nobody wants to think about Christmas lights in September. Which is exactly why the people who do get the install date they want, and everyone else takes what is left.
Holiday lighting is not like most services, where a busy week means waiting a fortnight. It is compressed into roughly a six-week installation window governed by weather, and every client in a company's book needs service inside that same window. There is no capacity to expand into.
The Real Calendar
| When | What should be happening |
|---|---|
| August – September | Design consultation, measurement, quoting. Best availability and full color and product selection. |
| Early October | Last comfortable booking window. Custom-cut runs need lead time for materials. |
| Late October | Installation begins. Roofs are dry, temperatures are workable, ground is soft. |
| November | Peak installation. Most displays go up now, switched on at the client's chosen date. |
| Late November | Effectively full. Remaining slots are weather-dependent. |
| December | Repairs and service only. New installations are weather-permitting at best. |
| January | Takedown, and storage for next season. |
Why Michigan Sets the Deadline
Three physical constraints, none of which negotiate.
Roof Safety
Installation means working at height on pitched surfaces. A dry October roof is a manageable working environment. A November roof with frost on the north slope is genuinely dangerous, and an iced roof is a hard stop. No responsible company puts technicians on a slick roof in December because a client booked late.
Frozen Ground
Ground-level displays — pathway lighting, stake-mounted elements, yard features — need stakes driven into soil. Once the ground freezes, that is over. Anything not installed before the first hard freeze either does not happen or needs a different mounting approach entirely.
Clip Adhesion and Material Behavior
Clips seat properly on clean, dry shingles and gutters. Ice, snow and wet leaves compromise attachment. Wire also stiffens considerably in the cold, which makes clean runs and tidy corners much harder to achieve. Installations done in genuinely cold conditions look measurably worse.
The one deadline that matters: the first sustained hard freeze in Southeast Michigan. It has arrived as early as the first week of November. Everything not installed by then is subject to weather.
What Booking Early Actually Gets You
- Your preferred switch-on date. Most clients want lights live for Thanksgiving weekend. That is a narrow, heavily contested window.
- Full design flexibility. Custom colors, specialty products and unusual roofline solutions need ordering lead time.
- Proper measurement and design. A measured quote in September involves an actual site visit. A late booking often gets estimated from the curb.
- Coordination with other work. Gutter cleaning should happen before lights go up — clipping a display to a gutter full of wet leaves means either removing the display to clean it or leaving the gutters blocked all winter. Booking both together solves it.
- Pricing certainty. Early-season quotes are not competing against peak-season demand.
Design It Before You Book It
The genuinely hard part of holiday lighting is that you are asked to approve something you cannot picture. Most companies hand over a brochure and ask you to imagine it on your house.
We built LightCast™, our proprietary visualiser, specifically for this. Upload a photo of your home, the tool automatically detects your roofline, and you see the display on your actual house — with your color choices, changed in real time. It measures the roofline in linear feet, counts the peaks and valleys, and produces accurate pricing from real measurements rather than a guess.
It runs on our holiday lighting page, it is free, and your photo never leaves your device.
Commercial Books Even Earlier
Retail, plazas, dealerships and municipal properties should be finalising in August or early September. Commercial displays involve larger runs, more power planning, sometimes permits, and — critically — must be live for the start of the shopping season, not for a family's chosen weekend. Retail lighting that goes live in mid-December has missed most of its purpose.
What About Takedown?
Worth confirming what a quote includes. A proper service covers installation, mid-season service if a run fails, takedown in January, and storage of the materials until the following season. Storage matters more than people expect — commercial-grade lighting stored badly in a garage tangles, gets crushed and degrades, and next year's install starts with replacing what should have lasted years.
The Bottom Line
Book in September. Installation happens late October through November, the constraint is Michigan weather rather than company capacity, and the calendar genuinely fills. If you are reading this in December wondering whether it is too late — call anyway, because cancellations happen, but plan on September for next year.
