Concrete Cleaning — Warren, Michigan

Concrete Cleaning in Warren

The porch, steps and driveway on a Warren bungalow were poured with the house and have never been sealed. Sixty winters of salt off Mound Rd and Van Dyke Ave have turned them charcoal. Surface cleaning brings back most of the poured color, and we tell you up front which slabs are past it.

Original concrete is the surface we clean most in Warren. On the 1950s and 1960s grid the driveway ran from the street to a detached garage at the back of a compact lot, the porch and steps were poured with the foundation, and none of it was sealed. Fifty to seventy years later the surface has absorbed traffic film from the Mound Rd, Van Dyke Ave, Groesbeck Hwy and I-696 corridors and the salt that follows every plow, and a pale gray slab reads as black.

The ground under it makes things worse. Warren sits on the flat lake plain of southern Macomb County, and the county soil survey rates nearly all of it poorly drained clay. Drives puddle after rain, water lingers on the low blocks along the Red Run and Bear Creek drains, and frost lifts old flatwork at the joints. The puddle spots grow algae and hold rust and salt residue, and they are the darkest areas on any slab.

A surface cleaner is the right tool for this concrete. It spins a pair of nozzles under a hood at a fixed height, so every square foot gets the same pass and there are no wand stripes when the slab dries. Hot water and a degreaser go on first where a car has dripped in one spot for decades, and rust from a railing or a sprinkler head gets its own treatment. What comes back is the poured color, minus the wear that is in the concrete rather than on it.

The Cleaning, Slab by Slab

We start by mapping the flatwork: drive, apron, walk, porch, steps and any patio behind the garage. Oil and rust spots are pre-treated first so they have time to break down. The surface cleaner then runs the field of every slab, and a wand handles edges, step risers and the joint lines. A final rinse pushes the loosened film into the yard rather than back across the clean slab. A two-car drive starts at $149, a porch-and-steps set adds a small line, and the ribbon drive to a detached garage is quoted by its measured length. Heaved or spalled sections are noted on the quote, because cleaning will not level them.

What Wrecks Old Flatwork

A wand held close to sixty-year-old concrete etches it. The cream layer on top is thin, and once a narrow high-pressure stream cuts through it the aggregate shows in a stripe that never blends back in. The second mistake is bleach poured straight from the jug, which whitens the spot, kills the grass beside it and does nothing about the oil underneath. The third is cleaning in November and leaving the slab wet for the first hard freeze. We clean at a set height, treat stains by type, and finish early enough in the year for the concrete to dry.

Timing It Right

April through October, once the ground has thawed and the slab can dry. Spring is the busiest season because the salt film is heaviest right after winter. If you plan to seal, book the cleaning for late summer or early fall so the concrete is warm and dry for the sealer. Drives along Mound Rd caught four construction seasons of dust while Innovate Mound rebuilt the road from I-696 north to M-59, and with the corridor reopened in 2026 those are the blocks we would clean first.

Concrete Cleaning in Warren: FAQs

How much does driveway cleaning cost in Warren?

From $149 for a standard two-car drive, with the porch, steps and front walk added as separate lines when you want them. The long ribbon drive to a detached garage on the postwar grid is measured and priced by its length. Buildup matters less than size here, since the surface cleaner runs the same pass either way, and pairing it with a house wash shares the trip.

Will cleaning fix the cracks and lifted slabs on my drive?

No, and we would rather say so now than after the truck leaves. Cleaning removes what sits on the concrete. Frost heave on Warren's clay lifts slabs at the joints, and salt spalling takes the surface off in flakes. Both are in the concrete, not on it. Cleaning makes them easier to see, and a sealer afterward slows further salt damage, but leveling or replacement is a concrete contractor's job.

Can you get out the oil stain where my car has parked for thirty years?

Most of it. A hot-water degreaser pre-treatment breaks down decades of drips before the surface cleaner runs, and the contrast with the surrounding slab drops sharply. Oil that has soaked deep into porous, unsealed concrete leaves a faint shadow. Rust from a railing or a sprinkler head is a different chemistry and gets its own treatment on the same visit.

Is it worth cleaning concrete this old, or should I replace it?

Clean it first. A cleaning costs a small fraction of a new drive, and the result shows you what you have. Sound slabs come back to something near their poured color and are worth sealing. If the cleaning reveals wide spalling or slabs heaved past a trip edge, you have spent $149 to make an informed replacement decision instead of guessing.
