House Washing in Utica

Painted wood is the material that sets Utica apart from the townships around it. On the oldest blocks beside the Clinton River, the clapboard and trim carry paint that has chalked in the sun and grown mildew in the shade, and the north walls under the mature canopy hold that mildew in the paint film year after year. A wash here has two jobs: kill the growth and lift the chalk without lifting the paint. That means a mild solution with a long dwell, a rinse at garden-hose pressure, and a walkaround first, because paint that is already peeling will come off in any wash and the owner should hear that before we start.

The brick and aluminum ranches of the 1950s and 60s and the growth-era homes of the 1960s and 70s fill the grid between downtown and the river-bottom streets. The second failure is chemical: a strong mix left on a hot wall bleaches paint and burns the boxwoods below it. Any frost-free month works, and the busiest stretch in Utica runs from the week the river drops in April through June, when the winter film and any silt come off before graduation parties in Utica Community Schools.
