The work itself is a rotary surface cleaner with hot water, which spins two nozzles under a hood so every pass overlaps the last and the pressure meets the slab evenly. Oil drips get a degreaser first, rust from a dripping spigot gets its own treatment, and edges and step risers are finished by hand. Hood Cleaner on the Field, Hand Wand at the Steps
We start by marking oil, rust and scaled areas, then pre-treat the stains so the cleaner has less to do. The surface cleaner runs in straight overlapping lanes from the garage to the apron, hot water on the field and lower pressure on any section that shows scaling. Porch floors, step treads and the walk get a hand wand held at a low angle and a set distance so no lane marks show. Runoff is directed down your own drive to the street, not into the neighbor's side yard, and the crew rinses the apron and gutter line last. A single drive takes about ninety minutes.
Zebra Stripes and Blown-Out Aggregate
A wand alone, waved across a driveway, leaves alternating light and dark stripes that never fade, because the jet cleaned unevenly and etched where it lingered. Held close on an old slab it blows the fine top layer off and exposes the aggregate, which turns a spot of scaling into a patch. Muriatic acid poured on rust bleaches the concrete white around the stain and eats the mortar on a brick porch base. On close-set lots the runoff floods the neighbor's side yard. A hooded cleaner at the right pressure does none of that.
Timing It Right
April through November, as soon as overnight lows stay above freezing. The busiest weeks are late May, when owners want the drive and porch clean before the Independence Festival weekend at Memorial Park and Cruisin' 53 rolls down Van Dyke, and again in October to strip a summer of grime and leaf tannin before the salt season starts. Sealing the same day needs a dry forecast.

Can you get my 1950s driveway white again?
Close to it, where the concrete is sound. Original slabs here were troweled smooth and pale, and a hot-water surface cleaner lifts the gray film back off to that tone. Sections that have scaled come clean but stay rough and slightly darker, because the exposed sand and stone are not the color of the troweled skin. There is an oil stain where my car parks. Will it come out?
Most of it, and sometimes all of it. Fresh drips lift fully with a degreaser and hot water. A stain that has soaked into the slab for years lightens a great deal but can leave a faint shadow, because the oil has traveled below the depth a wash reaches. Down your own drive to the street. The surface cleaner keeps its spray under a hood, so the water stays on the slab instead of fanning out, and the crew squeegees or rinses runoff toward the apron. The cleaning solution is mild and rinsed heavily, and the strip of lawn between the houses gets a final rinse so nothing sits on it.
Will pressure washing make the pitted spots worse?
Not at the pressure we use. Scaling is loose skin that has already let go, and a hooded cleaner at a set height and pressure removes only dirt. A wand at close range can lift more of that skin, which is why we do not use one on the field of a slab. After cleaning, a penetrating sealer on the sound areas is the way to keep more from letting go.
