How Old Flatwork Gets Damaged
The usual harm is a narrow tip held close. On concrete poured in the 1960s the cement paste at the surface is thin, and a high-pressure wand etches it into pale stripes that never blend and expose the aggregate to more salt. Blasting a heaved apron joint drives water under the slab, where it freezes and lifts it further. Bleach poured on the slab and left to dry kills the grass line and does nothing for oil. Cleaning without heat leaves the salt crust behind, so the drive dries gray again within a week.
Timing It Right
Spring is the natural time, after the last salt has washed off Utica Rd and 14 Mile Rd and before the drive gets its summer use. Late summer and early fall are the second window, and the better one if you plan to seal, because the slab needs a few dry days after cleaning before a sealer goes on.
